Gals and Guys,

Sold my boat 3 years ago and finally just bought a new one. I will be picking it up in S. Oregon later this week and plan on going straight out to Buoy 10 "on my way home" so to speak.

I could use a little help on meeting the Coast Guard requirements to be legal on the water. This is what I remember as a minimum you must have with you. Please add/delete/correct me where I am deficient.

1. horn of some type
2. fire extinquisher
3. life jacket for each person on board
4. throwable PFD
5. paddle? not sure on this one
6. flare kit

Thanks for your help,

Steve

Yep that's the basic list. The first four are required. Add to that; Anchor, Navigation (compass, loran or gps), VHF radio and navigation lights.

Oh yea and proof that you, own the boat and recently registered it in your name. Or something like written permission from the owner and his registration. The man is becoming a real stickler lately. They check VIN #'s, safety gear, Blood alcohol levels and attitudes. Be safe and have fun.

Better check with whatever agency in WA licenses/registers boats (In OR its the Marine Board) for what you need in your circumstances. With no numbers on the boat, you can bet on being checked !

Equipment requirements depend on the size of the boat (Assume this is true in Washington also ??). Can't think of anything beyond your list & Pilar's. Oh I think you need tequila! And lemons. And BANANAS

Pood points Pillar, but you forgot one thing - an anchor line to go with the anchor! images/icons/smile.gif

Recommended length is 7 to 10 times the depth you are anchoring in. I've found this to be more of a guideline than a rule, but it depends on the type and weight of your boat, the current, etc...

My personal preference is a sturdy, heavy rocker type anchor. I've never had a problem with those. As for the chain attached to the first few feet off the anchor......I have never used one, and never had a problem. But to each his own.

Knowing cops like I do, you're right about the "attitude test". You'd better pass that one right off the bat or it can ruin an otherwise great day.
