:help:ok 2 quick questions (1) so my manual says I need at least 8 inch's in all directions of a vertical mount due to heat generated by charger...does anyone have one already mounted in less area? and how much heat is generated?...the spot I want to mount it is nowhere near those measurement's...more like 2 inch's on all sides.... and (2)do you lose charging efficiency the longer the output wire? one battery will be stock length on charger (3ft)but the other one will have to be lengthened approximately 6ft to reach the house battery up front..thanks in advance and tight lines...jfa686

Same problem you had --

I've got plenty of clearance on sides, but tight at the top. I installed the charger anyway. I also had to lengthen the leads on one side. I made sure I used marine wire, and used pretty thick stuff (I matched the size wire that was on the charger, I think it was 12 GA), soldered and heat shrinked the connections.

No problems yet, but I've never tested to see how hot the charger gets. I also have never run the batteries down very much, so it's always used as just a maintenance charger rather than trying to fully charge a (mostly) dead battery (which would have a much larger/longer current draw)

The above pics are from an install I did last summer. I have probably 14 months on the charger, in this boat. 26 Months total, between two boats. I can't imagine a little heat is actually gonna burn the unit out. I would say if you had two nearly-dead batteries and wanted them charged, you would likely generate some serious heat. I really wouldn't worry about it.
