How do I get all that sping back into the part that holds it? I tried to start my kicker this weekend while on the water and I pulled the dang rope out of it, Dummy me, I took the gosh darn thing apart and "SPRING" the spring came out. I didnt even get a chance to see which direction it went. How do I get the spring back in?

Wind it up and use some light tie wire to secure the spring temporarily in the proper circumference... The direction of the coil is the same as the direction it rotates when you pull the rope , remove the wire carfully after getting it back in the housing...You might have to give it some tension to have the rope retract properly ...A timber faller or small engine mechanic can repair it if its too much to handle ... Barney

I got it fixed. I just wound it up from the outside in and it worked! It is all back together now, Just got to see if I can make it run. My motor seems to turn both ways. Does it matter?

The recoil starter will only turn in one direction ,but if you put it on backwards you'll have to get out of the boat to start it ...Its O K for your motor to turn in both directions ...
Strange thing about 2-strokes, if the timing is set close enough to top dead center (TDC), the 2-stroke motor will run in both directions. That'll blow your mind! Put it in gear and and go in revese!
I did this once many years ago on a Yamaha trail bike, timing was miss-set and it back fired when I kick started it, put it in gear and it went backwards.

Is the power head supposed to turn clockwise or counterclockwise?
In OMC outboard school they demonstrated a bad blocking diode in the switch box that was supposed to direct the sensor signal to the CD ignition. The 85 HP Johnson flywheel would go 180 degrees then back the other direction 180 degrees. Never saw this "Maytag" action in the field but it was impressive in the school's shop.

I used to have a marina with a couple dozen 10 and 20 Hp Merc outboards on rental boats. You can imagine how many times a week a starter rope either broke or was pulled clear out. There's no way to put those things back together without drawing blood and looking like a monkey trying to make love to a porcupine.:smirk:

Sorry SS, I don't know. I would think you could tell by looking at what side, left or right of center, the rope goes into the housing on top. It probably goes in the center considering your luck. I would figure motors all turn the same way, but you ought to turn it by hand in gear to make sure.
I think it's pretty damn neat the way you dive into the repairs on these motors of yours. You're saving your self a ton of money, and learning a bunch at the same time. It appears you're not screwing up a bunch of stuff and costing you alot of extra in the process either. Most people will just take their rigs to the shops, where they sit out in the rain for two weeks before the shop charges them $300.00+ for a repair that may have taken THEM SELVES a few more hours, but saved the $225.00!
My hats off to you sliverslinger2001!

Thank you for the compliment, Mine was in the center, and I had to figure out which way it wound up. I tried both ways, finally I called norsky and he said that most motors turned clockwise so I set it up that way. It now runs. The only thing I am concerned about is that I may be in reverse:bigshock:
My motor will start and run both ways. I guess I better take my tools with me when we hit the water tomorrow. If I am in reverse then I know how to fix that.
I am just glad I got it done and it still runs. :smash:
Had to go out and uncover my Merc 9.9 and CHECK for myself what direction it turned! It is indeed clockwise...
Good fishin' tomorrow!
