Well I had a great time. I didn't win, but we caught fish! First place was just over 27 lbs.
Lots and lots and lots of boats. Some good friendly folks, most of them good skippers. Only had one guide give me the squeeze, must have been those CF #'s.
Just for the record, I was NOT the FishRite on the gravel bar for the entire derby images/icons/grin.gif . We fished Sat and Sun with these stats: 2 chinook, 1 coho, 14 bullhead and 2 trout. Not bad for a tourist.
One bit of scandal- the two top mens division fish were caught by two guys fishing together, FROM THE BANK! The same two guys were both in the tackle shop just 5 minutes after the awards. They clamed that they were cheated out of the grand prize. They claim they had called and were told the winning fish was 35lbs., so they didn't bother to get to the weigh in until the afternoon. They said their fish lost enough weight from sitting in the sun to lose. It was foggy all day!
Did I tell you my wife caught a 65lb at 4:05. The weigh in was at 4:00.

Just bet those 2 bankies were fishing at Lobster Creek, too. They claim to be catching them on night crawlers. I saw 2 fish in the mid-40s brought in by that outfit. I believe the worm just gives that big hook a perfect drift into the salmon stacked in that hole....if ya get my meaning.

I bet next years derby will stipulate that all eligible fish must be caught in the bay!

I can not beleive they only busted two, must have only been there a short time. I have never seen the bay with so many bait fish in the 15 years I have been fishing there, we were trying to catch fish with what we thought were good bait, the chinook had more to pick from and were only eating the best. The 38 lb fish we got must of been crazy. I get the Gold Beach paper so I will watch for the article in the paper.
Is the fishing or catching still good in the bay?
