I've read a lot here about doing the conversion from console to tiller, but what about the handling differences. Did the older Alumaweld consoles and tillers, have the same frame structure? I'm just wondering if the boat would still handle and float the same? Would the fuel tank be able to be a front mounted one like the new Flatbottoms? Any comments. Thanks, Fishy

Sorry, I am not wualified to answer your post. However, I am curious why you wou8ld want to have a tiller over a console? I have a tiller and wish I had a console on my 15 Alaskan SS. My research told me I was ahead to just trade boats. Just curious

Blind Bobber, I would prefer to have the extra room in the boat, thus having a more open boat. I don't have a sled yet, but if removing the console was an option, I would buy a boat with one and remove it. Fishy

In a small boat there is far more room with a tiller, and yes you can convert it. New tiller handles are pricy, but you should be able to find one used. I converted mine from a CC to tiller, it was a huge improvement.

This is what I think
From what I've played with, I believe you can control a boat better, and faster with a tiller vs a console.

Most alumaweld boats with center consoles that I've seen, the consoles are just bolted to the floor...but them are on the few that I've seen.

It is cheaper usually to buy a boat that is set up the way you want it in the begining. But, on the other hand, CC flatbottom boats are not a hot market, and unless priced correctly will take some time to sell. (good news for you)

If you find a very nice Flattie with a CC and you can negotiate the $1500 conversion out of the price that would also be a good way to go.

Also, do not take so and so's word for it. Drive both and figure out what you like first.

I did this conversion last year on my boat. You are looking at about 500.00 to convert it by the time you are done with all of the odds and ends. I will pm you with my number if you want to call with specific questions.
