I have a 1994 14 foot smokercraft with a 25 horse Mariner. It's a good setup, but sometimes could use a little more power. The Coast Gaurd rating says its good up to 40 horsepower, but thats based on the weight of a 2 stroke 40 horse, I'm sure. My question is this, does anyone know what a mid 90's 2 stroke 40 horse weighs, so that I can determine what size 4 stroke doesn't weigh more?
That rating is based solely on total horsepower, 2 or 4 stroke. There is also a total weight listed on the boat and that is what you must make sure you are not over.

Thanks, I did not know that. I had always assumed it was as much about the weight as the HP. I'll just worry about total weight then. I don't think I need 40 hp, 30 would probably be fine. If I put my trolling motor a battery in and a big fishing buddy, it can be hard to get on plane with the 25.
