Hello all, the news media has me a little confused. They have mentioned that there is massive amounts of mud going down the Cowlitz river and one other that I cant remember the name of. Is this making a mess of the Columbia River? I didnt think Cowlitz was in the drainage area for Mt Rainer. Are they right or did I miss understand them?

I havent been watching to much of the news lately but what I did hear was about the Nisqually being the one effected by the mud. The Cowlitz drains off of Mt St Helens doesnt it?

To my knowledge, the Nisqually was the only river affected. www.friendsofthecowlitz.com (http://www.friendsofthecowlitz.com) images/icons/cool.gif

It seems like a major mud flow (lahar), but not over the banks of the Nisqually river.

Cowlitz River is fed by Cowlitz Glacier on Mt. Rainier.
There are three dams above the actual good salmon and steelhead fishing areas of the Cowlitz that would/should contain whatever mess might flow downhill from a lahar.

All three reservoirs ( Riffe, Mayfield and Scanewa ) are at extremely low water levels due to the dry winter we had.
