They don't make a living at it Rick, how could they? They either net with the permits that have been handed down through the family or they lease them to someone else. They do it to make extra money. I'm wondering how many permits one of these guys can lease? Does anyone know? I thought I had posted to this thread earlier...wonder who I offended this time?

I was told once about 4 yrs ago or more ??,when I was writeing all the anti-gillnet letters,I could and sending them to everybody and there brother includeing the president and vice-president and several newspapers includeing the ones in Astoria a member of the gillnet assoc.I believe at the time it was the president of the Assoc.that they did not fish in the Columbia river to make money they make there money in alaska that they fish the columbia river for EXCESS !!!! FISH !!!,I asked them what excess fish he was talking about he didn't answer that question for me but he did tell me there was appx. 3500 gillnetters licsened to fish the columbia some from as far away as california,Some of them just fished to keep there licsence or permit or whatever they call it.I don't remember evrything he said it was 4 or more years ago but,I never forgot what he said about EXCESS fish he also let me know that the sturgeon were in no danger because he could drop his nets above the Astoria bridge,I don't remember the run he mentioned and net a 100 fish anytime he wanted my question to him was how many did he kill after he turned them lose he then let me know how much damage they did to his nets.Check this out he owes 7 boats and his son was part owner of some huge fishing boat in Alaska some place, cost him a 1/2 million dollars to buy into 1/2 the boat.Doesn't sound to me like there hurting for money any.I believe there should be NO GILLNETTING in the Columbia River PERIOD its the last river in the states to allow this. There is no need for them now with the net pen salmon thats available now. Most of the fish caught here end up back east.Gillnetting has been stopped in Florida,Texas and California and there sport fishing industry has grown. It has been proven time after time that the sports fisherman puts three to four times the money back into the economy then the gillnetters do and you will never make me believe that the sports fisherman does more damage to the fishery then the gillnetters do !!!I didn't mean to make this so long but I just DO NOT BELIVE THAT THERE SHOULD BE ANY GILLNETTING IN THE COLUMBIA !!! Our government should get there head out there A$$ and tell the indians now that they have all these casinos to help them make a living they don't need to gill net anymore other then what they need for there tradition dictates period. Before there allowed to build anymore they should make them agree to this or down come the casinos !!

The fact is, the majority of commercial gill netting operations are a very good tax write off to show a loss, for the operators real business(es). With the current prices of anything, I ain't buyin' the make a living and feed a family deal, at all. images/icons/shocked.gif
