Man, it was rough out there today, and I took the kids? ...To try and convince them fishing is enjoyable? I always screw up and take them the wrong days!
Anyway, a 21 foot pleasure craft, a Forwinns, capsized out at 10 today in 3 to 5 foot swell. Three people were aboard and picked up by the Cape Disappointment Coast Guard and taken to Warrenton where Emergency vehicles waited.
They believed it was a case of overload, not enough freeboard, as it had a large engine.
Be careful out there guys... We made it to 14 and the kids and I started to turn green. Not fun, too much wind chop and rain.
Bummer, no fish either. Can you believe it? I told them it was a 'for sure' fish on day! They believed me and I failed them! ARGH!
Thank GOD the people are fine though. Whewie! Scary out there!

Thats to bad to hear. I am going to ask a really dumb question that I think I know the answer to but want to make sure.
What is the freeboard? (is it the space between where the motor mounts and where the inside of the boat starts)

Grits....I don't know what the exact definition means, but to me....it's the measurement from the waterline to the top of the sides or the top of the transom. ??

Yip, and there wasn't much, I guess! Some kind of ski boat or something.

There's a wake up call to wear your pfd.

It's also a wakeup call to pay attention.
Several years on the day of my only trip to B10, an 18-foot aluminum boat with 4 people capsized. The Coast Guard must have scrambled everything, because there was the chopper, motor lifeboat, inflatable, cutter and who knows what else. 2 people were able to swim to the jetty, 1 drowned on the spot, and we were close enough to the cutter's return trip to see a crewman administering CPR (in vain) to the fourth.
It can be fun, but it can also be your worst nightmare images/icons/frown.gif
John (who isn't sure if it's called a cutter or not)

It would be interesting to know what model of fourwinns they had. I have a 20' fourwinns and it has a whole lot of freeboard and most fourwinns that I have seen (limited number though) are of the same body style.
On another note, while out yesterday it was pretty choppy and rough, there were a couple of guide boat sleds out there. I could hardly believe it. It was great to hear that everyone made it.

I was at B10 today, but didn't notice when the boat sank. I can report that the chop was pretty significant, at times up to 3 feet and with a very short cycle. As usual, the armada was a diverse collection of craft, including car toppers and drift boats mixing it up with sleds, charters and at least one commercial shrimper trolling for salmon with sport rods. It was a lot of work to fish out there today. If the sea doesn't settle down I don't think I'd want to be around during the weekend. Then again, the barometer may be rising and the big bite could be on.

I had a feeling this kind of weather was coming earlier this week so I switched my Saturday trip to Raineir were the water will be a bit more enjoyable.

Good thinking David, I was out there today too and did we take a beating. Nothing like 3-4 foot chop 3-4 feet apart. I'm so dang sore I can't sleep. We did get one nice coho and I was berating myself until the checker told us we did better than most. It never ceases to amaze me the small boats that fish B10. When the waves start smacking my side windows I'm long gone. Of course when I was young and immortal it didnt bother me. Anyway theres plenty of time for B10 yet. Be safe!

it was a nasty day all over. Took a charter out of Garibaldi for Halibut. Went over a nasty bar at 6:00 AM and things got worse as we went. Finally turned back at 10 miles out. Water from the swells pushed by a south wind was making it clear over the flybridge, ringing the bell. You know it's bad when a charter captain turns back 10 miles out with a dozen on board. No fishing means no $$ for them. I would have loved to have gotten some fresh halibut but getting back safe is a whole lot better. I still wonder how much fun those guys who continued out, had.

Kind of a done topic, but I was browsing the archives a bit and saw this.
I was right next to them when they went down! They were fishin the rip tide and YES it was ROUGH out there images/icons/shocked.gif That was my first time out, and I get to see this?!!? My buddies and I were speculating that he probably took on a bunch of water through his engine vents on the side and didnt notice his rear end getting lower or check the engine compartment. I noticed him lower about the same time he did (we were about 60 yards away). He started to try to bail, but after about 15 seconds, realized he was too late...it was goin down! He called to a boat on the other side of us to come pick them up. They knew they were going down. And within 20 seconds, they were jumping. The other boat got to them pretty quick and the coast guard was there in about 3 minutes, tops...great response time. We saw the operator of the craft on the bow of the coast guard ship...you could tell it was the owner by the way his posture was (whipped).
It made us check our own compartment, and I'm glad we did, because we had taken on quite a bit ourselves and had to get to smoother water to bail because our bilge was shorted out.
Interesting first time out. whewee. images/icons/smile.gif

Bouy 10 over rated
Astoria Bridge and area underrated
This may sound funny But I have never been out to Bouy 10 cause when we start to head out there its to rough so we turn back in and find some other closer place to fish. We still seem to fill the boat with fish.
My theory is to match the area and conditions with the capability of your boat and comfort level.
Last week when we had the rain and it was so rough and windy one of my buddies found and fished in one of the only areas that was not so rough and found plenty of fish. So when it was rough this last Saturday we went to that same area and caught plenty of fish didnt go near 10.
Sorry to hear of accidents I cant imagine what that would be like, I wish the best for those out there today.
