Well...anchor fishing is in a different class of it's own, but if the only boat I had was a driftboat, and if I had a kicker on it and an anchor system, I'd be out in the Columbia....there's about 10,000+ Steelies crossing Bonneville Dam as we type and read, and the fishing's been really good out there on the "Big River".

Well...stealhead fishing is about a jillion times trickier than sticking a piece of meat on a hook and dropping it to the bottom. It takes training and practice, and U need to be in the right place at the right time.
Twin rocks south of Geribaldi is a good local spot for bottom fish...but if you can get out there, you can get out to bouy 1..ie why would you do the bottomfish thing when the ocean and bar are loaded with coho and chinook this year???

Just a clarification: Twin Rocks is north of Garibaldi bar about 1 to 2 miles, Three arch rocks is south of Garibaldi bar about 7 miles.
And do us all a favor, dont take your driftboat out in the ocean. I have seen them out there, but it is a recipe for getting wet, cold and dead.

dp,
You hoser! You're not giving up on the rivers, salmon & steelies that easily! Maybe it's time to try the Washington side or the Columbia. Nic & I caught approx. 1 crawdad per minute for half an hour in WW last week. Mmmm, the yummiest piece of tail a fish ever ate!
Maybe it's a low water or water temp too high problem. I think I'm gonna meet the challenge in small steps. Catch 'em first on bait then try the hardware I've been buying (just in case, I need it).
Talk to you soon.

Well first, thanks for the input on getting a drift boat.....now than, for some belly aching I have gone to the deschutes after work and I fished with a #4 blue/silver blue fox and also the green /silver blade and fished the island as well as another HOT ? spot - the cable crossing and this morning I was the second person at the cable, got there before daylight not a bite! When I left I could not believe all the people that were there, and did see TWO fish caught tho( at the island ). So this is steelheading? and fishing the world class deschutes? ummm. I used to be pretty good at dropping lead for rockbottom fish, anyone know of a good place on the coast to go for some tasty bottom dwellers? Not to sure about this steelheading; but I still like the idea of ROWING a drift boat around.

DP- Go back to the Deschutes, use #4 all brass in the areas mentioned, with the hot sun over head. I fished there last Wed. and did hook and loose one on a silver & chart. at 0600, but your best bet is the afternoon w/ a brass #4.
