Hey ifishers,
I plan to take my wife steelhead fishing up to the mouth of the Deschutes this weekend. Since she doesn't go with me very often, it would be great if I could put her into a fish. What, so far is the hot lure up there this year? Michael Jackson? Bagleys? Let me know, I'd appreciate any information.
Thanks, S

I just know that the FireTiger color is very consistent for me year after year. Might be up there this Sun/Mon. I hope that PM wind behaves itself

Check those fish counts, WOW!!!!! Might not want to drive that far to fight the wind, find those cold water tribs.....

This is just hearsay, but from different sources. #4 Blue Fox (or similar) spinner green (not chartruese) with a silver blade.
Might not hurt to have one along. Supposed to have been good in past years as well as this year.

you and about a million other people bugleman images/icons/smile.gif. i don't think i've ever seen so many people at heritage as i did today.
fished on the deschutes about three miles above the mouth and hooked one fish which broke me off (using 8lb tippet...dumb) on my second cast of the day (nothing for the next five hours). funny thing was that the light was right on the water...the fish came up out of a deep dark slot and just nailed the fly...i didn't see the gillnets out today so more fish should have been there...
i personally saw one other fish hooked and none landed; the odfw checker that i talked to around 10pm said that he had heard of three landed and one kept, all this for approximately fifty fishermen checked on the west side between the mouth and rattlesnake. the wind was up early, but died down by about 7pm.
checked eagle creek as well, quite a few fishermen and a few fish landed; they're fun to watch swimming around below the hwy. 30 bridge.
herman creek is full of weeds, didn't look good. hood river is running ugly with glacial silt in the afternoons at least.
good luck to all who make the trip.

Debated whether to pull the sled and troll off the mouth or take the bike and ride up river. Went with the bike and when I got to the river I was pleased to watch a guy releasing a nice native. Before too long, about an hour before dark, I was able to land about a 7 lb. native hen. Saturday morning back at the same spot and right at half hour before light, landed one more native. Later that morning, witnessed probably another eight to ten fish hooked, with people using anything from steelies to swinging flies to running hotshots with side planners. Tried to get a report from a couple of boats coming back to the launch from out in the Columbia, and they were somewhat tight-lipped. I wonder what's up with that images/icons/confused.gif

hello ifish. this is my first post. Fairly new to the computer scene, if you can beleive that. the reason those guys were tightlipped was embarrasment. so many fish and not many biters. fished the mouth on sunday and the fish were stacked in there like cord wood. fish rolling everywhere. managed only one. water was pretty warm.

I went up and fished the mouth with my wife and she hooked and landed a nice 8lb. hatchery fish on a Michael Jackson wiggle wart. She's happy. We saw about 30 fish caught in 5 hours of fishing. Then the wind kicked up big time. Still had a great time. Lots of boats.

NorthriverS, if you were up there yesterday, then I think I saw you. We were in the "Sneakin Out" black open sled. We started slow but lost three (one with busted line with Michael Jackson) and brought 4 to the boat, one was hatchery. Firetigers were good, but we got one on a experimental spinner with weight and two were with plugs with a bit of weight just before the wind kicked in. It seemed to me to be a few feet 3-4 deeper than I remember. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

This is my first post so please be kind :-)We fished from the bank on the Heritage side last Sat evening and Sun morning. Saw a lot of small fish jumping around, especially Sat night but no hits. Also didn't see anyone else land anything.
My question: Is scent allowed on the mouth of the Deschutes. My guess is no because the regs say artificial lures and flies only but I thought I would doublecheck. TIA.
