Since the salmon fishing at Bouy 10 and the ocean is sooo hot, it is not taking long to limit the boat. Does anyone know where to bottom fish off the mouth of the Columbia? GPS coodinates would be nice. Sure don't want to have to just go home early, the boss will just put me to work on her "honey do" list. images/icons/smile.gif

I vaguely remember posting a question like this a couple of weeks ago and everyone avoided it like the plague. I think that those spots must be secret. I agree though that on nice days when the fish box is full of salmon hunting lings would be good. I will keep checking on this post.

I asked the same question at the tackle shop in Illwaco earlier this summer. I was told the south jetty has good bottom fishing. The very end of the jetty is submerged and you have to watch out for that in rough water. Last year I motored around the submerged tip and looks like a great place to fish. Just give the large rocks some space and you should do ok. The best time to be fishing of course is on the incoming tide.
best of luck,

I do believe, and i'm doing this by memory as I was loosing my breakfast last year. There is a jetty, on the Washington side, out between, I would say ,..14 & 22 you will see it. It could be a piling row, but I want to say it is a jetty. Go over there and see if you get anything. I was told this by a guy that lives down there in the summer and that is what he does when he limits early in the tide. Like I said I was in no shape to think about remembering my bearings but I do believe there is a jetty over there. Something has to form Baker Bay.
Good Luck and let me know if I was just halucinating or if I realy did see land, and not just hoping it was land.

Fishchaser, Bouy's 14 to 22 are on the Oregon side. That's a lot of ground to cover. I've never seen people fish for bottom fish directly in the river. I've seen people cleaning bottom fish before when the ocean was to rough to get out, just didn't ask where. There are old wooden jetty's that could hold fish between Chinook and Illwaco. The entrance into Illwaco is protected by a rock jetty, maybe the west side holds bottom fish. I do remember watching people fishing close to the rocks here, just assumed they were fishing for salmon.
Tell you what, that river is huge and I do need to explore some more water. If anyone finds those pesky bottom dwellers, please share the wealth.
thanks,
Gregg

THAT'S IT!!! The jetty between Illwaco and Chinook. This guy is always bringing back bottom fish from that jetty. I know it's a lot of water to cover but that is the jetty he fishes after he gets his limit. He also has been throwing crab pots around those pillings and been getting huge crab.
Good Luck Tracy

I meant the entrance to Illwaco. The wood places is where he is getting all the crab. images/icons/rolleyes.gif DAH!! I get blond moments sometimes, and like I said, I was feeding fish. Tracy

I got ahold of my friend down there and he gave me a somewhat good Grid Coordinate for the GPS. Try 46'15 N 123'56 W This will get you in the view of the jetty. He says to fish the West side of it on an incoming tide. It pushes the fish onto the jetty.(And also your boat) So be careful. - Tracy

That's called the "A" jetty - the one that you see on your right when you enter the river from Astoria. There is a deep hole right off the tip where you can catch bottom fish at times - it's 100 ft. deep. It's only 20-40 feet deep on the west side. You are better off to motor over to the south jetty if the water is nice. This time of year there are lots of people salmon fishing near the "A" Jetty.
