It's a Great Day to Be Alive Jennie!!! Even though some of us not as fortunate as others,we don't need to worry about all the lines getting tangled , playing bumper boats and the combat fishing for a couple of fish. Just think ..News at 5:00. Have a nice day now . Some of us have to work. I get my pass this Friday to go get more Halibut. images/icons/grin.gif .I am going out of Garibaldi with "The Man" .He always gets me into fish. If I get one . I may be able to stop and Donate a piece to the Kilchis River ifish gal. I will try .It depends if my wife comes down Friday and if we get out. The wheather looks kinda iffy. images/icons/rolleyes.gif Take Care images/icons/cool.gif Tom

Big wave... no boat.... wave flattens, "Oh my gosh! Look at the boats! I'm coming down right on top of someone! Big wave... no boats! Give me some dramamine, quick!
Nah.... I want to stay home! I do! I want to work at my desk! No salmon for this girl... huh uh. I hate fishing. mhm!

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Okay here is a limited bouy 10 report. As I went by on my way to the Ocean, there were no nets out and a hundred boats or more. On my way back with our limits, there were no nets out. GO TO THE OCEAN. The seas were flat and I had over 30 take downs in 90 minutes. After we found the school, not more than 5 minutes went by between hits. Got our last keeper just before we ran out of bait. All fish in the 7-10 pound range.

By the way the launch was packed, a lot of unexperienced boaters skrewing up the launch and people everywhere. I don't think the fish are in yet. In my humble opinion, the Buoy 10 opener is overated.

I posted this above before I noticed this thread for posts. Took me less than two hours at buoy 10 for my limit. Lost one and missed a couple of hits. Both fish in the 8-9 range and loaded with bait fish. Whole herring on a ez-diver 20-25 pulls down. It did go in spurts. We lost a few fish on the way upto the boat and missed several hits.

All in all I thought it was pretty good fishing. It tapered off pretty fast towards the high tide. We cut it off at noon with 1 fish short of a limit for the boat.

Same report as finclipped. Ran out past Buoy 4 after seeing little action at 10, and had our limit in two hours. Back in port by 10:30. Seas were small and the weather was great. Got one small chinookie 7-8 lbs and had lots and lots of jacks on. The barbless hooks helped but there are still 30-40 fish out there with very sore lips.
A couple of the fish had big fat herring in them. It looks like the feed is good. images/icons/smile.gif

Passed right by the parking lot at Buoy 10 and out into the ocean we went. Tryin2fish, My pop, and I all out past Buoy 4. The Ocean was flat and the bite was HOT HOT HOT.. Even though tryin2fish should change his name to feedinthefish we Limited the boat by 09:45 after starting at 0745 or so. Pop had one on that snapped his 40 lbs Mono on his pole and what we saw is it was big!! So if anybody finds a fish with a red fishflash and a half green half white delta diver you are welcome. Anyway headed back tomorrow and out for now. Later. images/icons/grin.gif

Buoy 10 opener was great!!! images/icons/grin.gif The line at Hammond around 6:30 am was about 7 boats!. The put in was quick and easy! We were fishing around Buoy 12 at about 7am. Had an immediate take down and boated about a 9lb silver. Our fish came in flurries. There was a tremendous bite around 10 am. Everybody around us was netting fish except for us. We moved back to Buoy 10 around noon and banged 4 fish right away to complete our limits. The weather was excellent and the water was flat. It was one of the best openers that I can remember. We used divers, fish flashers and the Rotary salmon killer. Herring was the ticket. Reserve it at Tackle Time. Use fresh only!!
I have never seen so many clouds of bait fish on the fish finder with salmon all around them. The down rigger poles were bouncing from all the bait fish hitting the cables. We will be back down there Saturday!

The ocean is still King! We talked to one buddy that caught and released about 45 fish on Wednesday between Buoy 2 & 4. Another gal complained that it took her multiple tries to get her bait beneath the mass of silvers so that she could catch her 21# chinook. images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/wink.gif

I thought I'd quit being a lurker and post a report. We fished Buoy 10 yesterday and were suprised at the light traffic. We like the WA side as the run is shorter so i can't comment on Hammond, but both Chinook and Ft. Clatsop were empty. Started fishing seriously about 10:00 (we usually don't start fishing until the 'wave' comes about two to three hours after the low slack.)with green delta's, about 6 feet of leader, chartreuse or glow/pink spot 2" hootch over fresh herring at 14 pulls. Every bait (13) we put in the water was bit and we had six to the boat within the hour. All of our fish were 8-12# with the one native being the smallest. As we never let our boat 'drive itself' while we are out there, we watched our second rod hammer until the fish came off on 3 double headers. It was like the Buoy 10 of old with half the boats. One suggestion: if you crowds bothers you stay on 'the line'. It's much more pleasant. Barb and I did it for years in a 14 foot Western with never a problem. Now with the 17 foot Whaler ('Tuna Maru') it's a piece of cake. Well, I've been too wordy already, but I want to thank everyone for sharing all this valuable information. This is what fishing is all about. By the way Jennie, you've got a GREAT BOARD! Thank you. Tight Lines and if any of you are on 'the line' Aug 8th or 9th, come over and say hello. Barb's the one catching all the fish! images/icons/grin.gif

jcarufo, Welcome to the board and thanks for the report. For 5 years I have waited for the infamous Buoy 10 bite. You know the one were everyone limits and fish are all over. Personally I have never seen it. This may be the year. This is certainly the earliest I have seen the silver bite over the past 5 years.

Thank you for the welcome! Hound, the ramp in Chinook is fine. We always launch at low tide, or there abouts, and have never had a problem. There seems to be lots of parking and the fresh bait supply seems to be adequate. You pass right by Sand Island on your way out, so it's easy to drop a couple of pots for crabs. There always seems to be a Chinook or two on the low slack at the Green can as well. We had our chance at about 50 feet, but blew it. The ride is probably less than half the distance that Hammond ramp is and with the price of marine gas it makes the drive accross the bridge worth it. With all that, we're staying with friends the 8th and 9th in Hammond and will launch there. It's been probably 5 years, so we'll be able to see the difference. Anyway, thanks again for the welcome. This board is great and a wealth of information. New to fishing? Pay attention. The information you can glean from this board is priceless. Tight Lines, Have a Great Day!

Hello Everyone! Fished out of Ilwaco saturday startesd fishing right by the Ilwaco jetty and we actually had a nice nooker on but lack of practice and experience was on that fishes side! Then we went on out to ten and rode the incoming rodeo with the usual armada of craft...the bite was spotty yet we managed 5 very respectable Co-ho two of which went over 10#. We also cuaght a big Flounder! We would have limited (three people) but lost due to various silly reasons, l.d.r., broken leaders, tangled lines, etc. Anyways it was alot of fun. Goodluck and Tightlines!!!

We will be launching around 10:30, but probably from Ft. Canby, it's closer. (I work in the emergency dept. at OHSU Wednesday night, so won't arrive until then). We are staying at a friends in Hammond Thursday night and will launch there Friday. We fish an old 17ft Boston Whaler named 'Tuna Maru' with a 90hp Honda and 7.5hp Honda kicker(it came with the name and we've been told that to change it is bad luck). If we miss you at the ramp, look for us right at '10' about noon when the rip finally gets going. Look for the two 'red suits'; we'll be there. Both Barb and I look forward to saying hello. Have a Great Day! Tight Lines.

Hope to see you there jcarufo.

I have been a Tillamook fisherman for years, have only been to the Columbia twice, where is the Ft. Canby launch. Being closer will save on fuel.

Thanks,
Keith

FishinMishin2,
Just noticed your post on page 2. Ft. Canby is a State/Federal(?) park just past Ilwaco on the Washington side. Keep driving through Chinook and Ilwaco and follow the signs. The road is loop 100 I think. It's a little slow road about 3 miles long or so and you will come to the park/campground and the Ft. Canby store. The boat ramp is the first road past the store on the left. It's two lane with a small parking area. $4.00 to launch and park. Fish cleaning station too. We've launched in all tides with our 17ft Whaler with no trouble. There are lot's of places for fresh bait along the way, but we've always used Ilwaco bait and tackle. The Ft. Canby store sells bait too, but for some reason we've never tried them. The run is about a mile, past the Coast Guard station, and you come out on the Columbia just NE of Bouy 10. If you make a left past the pileings you'll see sand island. We dump our crab pots on the 25ft edge and usually have a couple of crabs to take home. Never great, but usually something. You go 45 degrees from there to the SW and you'll see Buoy 10. We're usually fishing about 10 minutes from the ramp. Some people like the ramp some don't. Other places to look are the Chinook County ramp (you pass by on your way to Ilwaco) and the Ilwaco ramp. Chinook is two lanes and also has a sling. It's our second favorite. Ilwaco is a really nice ramp also, we've just not tried it. Hope this helps. Have a Great Day! Hope to meet you Thursday.
