Went out and bought a VHF unit last night. Will be down at Buoy 10 the week of the 13th of August. I saw in the other thread that there will be some other Ifishers there at that time also. For you guys (or gals) that are doin' the Buoy 10 shuffle, what VHF channel are you going to be using??? I'll be staying at the NACO in Seaview, wouldn't mind meeting a few more folks from the board and maybe fishin' with some of you. Also if you use the search feature there was a real good thread from a few months ago that Pilar started about do's and dont's for the VHF users.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif

I will be down there with my fishing partner STZ II and Drahcir. We will be down there the 12 - 19th of August. Pick a channel & we can communicate all day. I'll will be fishing around 14 and 22 and maybe over by the position of the old yellow can that is no longer with us. My boat and I don't do bouy 10. just not enough power for my safety. I will be laying out my crab pots around Social Security beach on the Oregon side and we will be staying at the KOA across from FT. Stevens. Hope to see you all there.- Tracy images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif

It is time! Let's pick an official ifish channel and stick with it. I'll post it up top.

Ouch! I just got stuck with a scolding letter for going along with the ifish VHF channel usage.
Seems it is not legal to use it for this manner?
I don't know! I'll get a manual and see, but seems like so many people use them for that.
I don't have one, so I don't know.
Anyone?
The letter stated that by NOT using one, we could save his life? He is a skipper.
I'd like some factual info and education here.

I did a little web search trying to educate myself. Little good it did, but here are some resources:
Channels and their proper uses (http://www.fcc.gov/wtb/marine/vhfchanl.html)
Scroll down to V. HOW TO OPERATE YOUR MARINE VHF RADIO (http://www.fcc.gov/wtb/marine/fctsht14.html#SEC2)

And I couldn't find whether or not it is legal to do fishing reports.

Thanks to you guys, I will soon know all, right?

Here's the info I have from the FCC (Fact Sheet PR-5000) on use of VHF ... there are some frequencies for non-commercial / recreational use. Those channels are 19, 68, 69, 71, 72 and 78.
Of those, 68 is the preferred channel as 69 is sometimes used commercially. 71 and 72 are designated for safety related information. 78 is designated for port operations, such as identifying when locks might open or when a docking procedure will be initiated.

That said, the clear choice ... and the one most frequently used around TBay in my experience ... is 68. Here's what the directive says about 68: "NONCOMMERCIAL - Working channels for voluntary boats. Messages must be about the needs of the ship. Typical uses include fishing reports..."

Not surprisingly, the FCC and Coast Guard have a lot to say about VHF radios. See the following: http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/marcomms/vhf.htm

Great info Pete. Sory I missed this thread. I was busy (trying to) give chase to the Halibut. It was not meant to be this time.

An official channel for Ifish? Great idea but I bet it would be frowned on. Just hail on 16 or 9 and go somewhere else. I use 66 and 77 and always have. I'll have to read through the stuff Pete left above and educate myself.

Great job folks at finding that info from the FCC. I'm an FCC licenced E Tech and I couldn't recall those rules. images/icons/confused.gif
In case you all don't know me, I'm one of Capin'Dan's gremlins. I've enjoyed reading the antics and info put on this board. To better identify myself, I was the Banana Terrorist who tried to bomb the Sea Swan with a banana. I have seen the error of my ways however and have repented of my Banana Bombing ways.
Hey buy the way Pilar, did you hear the Sea Swan got a limit of Big Fat Flat Feesh later Saturday morning? Ofcorse this was after I left (maybe I still have some attonment to do).
