After making a couple of posts extolling the virtues of the new Gamakatsu barbless hooks, we proceeded to lose at least 6 and maybe 8 silvers at the boat yesterday and I watched sevaral missed hits. The last two trips we lost almost no fish or no fish, but it all caught up yesterday. I guess the law of averages caught up , averaging out. We really should have been limited by 7:30 AM (with 8 fish)but at 9 A.M. ran out of bait. (Bought 4 dozen, was shorted 2 dozen...another story) And headed in with 3 people limited and one poor fellow skunked after losing about 6 or more of those fish. I have a new theory about the losses. I never seem to lose many fish on my El Cheapo yellow Eagle Claw rods when mooching, while my friend with his Loomis suffered immensely. I think the ultra sensitive rod was causing him to set hook too soon and not giving the fish a chance to take the bait well, while my son Tom, being the laid back fisher he is would just reel up til he felt pressure and set hook and get every one. I also prefer the spongy Eagle Claws for this purpose and leave my sensitive rods home. (Actually I keep one stiff fast action rod for jigging and deep work aboard). My other buddy with his semi-spongy rod lost the second most, so maybe there is something to be said for those old bendy fiberglass rods that collect spiderwebs most of the year. images/icons/wink.gif

Moral of the story, just like all bait fishing let the fish take the bait long enough.

The other one is there isn't a sure all for not lossing fish, some days you get them all, some days you don't.

Long live the "yella" rod. I have had great hook up rates on the glass rods and Gami barbless hooks. I haven't missed a hook up in the last two trips. 11 for 11. I bought two more glass rods over the weekend and will be breaking them in thursday. images/icons/smile.gif I love it when the $30 rod outproduces the $300 Loomis'. images/icons/grin.gif

I know my time is coming, but overall I still think the Gami Barbless and glass rods are the way to go for these coho.

I have to agree with finclipped and Mr Johnson. And it really is a very strange day when the yellow rods outperform your expensive favorites. But these coho require something a little bit different it would seem. (getting the timing just right to let them eat but not long enough to eat and run)Luckily they are an inexpensive fish to catch (tackle wise)They are some outstanding table fare. Salmon for dinner last night, salmon tonight...Life is good.
