Ok, I'm stuck here for a week on a family vacation and I don't know what to do. I know there must be crabs ... where? It's got to be too early for salmon. I did convince the family that we needed to bring the boat cuz we needed to use it as a trailer for all the "stuff" we need. But now the boat is taunting me..."use me, fish me, take me out and cruise me". What's the Nestucca bar like? Where do I find out? Is the reason there are dories because the bar is so bad? Help me, please, before I pass another fishless day.

Pete,

I'm not familiar with the Nestucca bay entrance but checked my handy dandy "Boating in Oregon Coastal Waters" guide. Looks like the ocean entrance is one big sand bar and not recommended for access to the ocean.

I'd say your best shot at ocean fishing and bay crabbing is heading north to Tillamook bay.

best of luck,

Gregg

Pete, it's all there right in front of you.

Skip the bar, its nor for crossing
The bay has crabs and should still have tons of red tail perch.
There should be chinook comming into the bay and in the lower river(it's still early though)
Siletz should also have some early fish.
Yaquinna bay south of you will have crabs, fish, clams, and some fish. Good safe bat if you chase chinook.

Pete, There is in fact great crabbing in the bay but you really need to go out towards the mouth to do real well. Be very careful and stay away from the mouth, it will get you in a heartbeat if the tide is going out and you lose a motor. I always carry a good anchor that i can throw in an emergency if that should happen to me. Secondly, the warning about low tide and the channel is wise information. When i first stated crabbing and fishing the bay i was out of my boat more than once pushing same. I dont think the salmon are in much yet (maybe a stray) but you can always give it a shot.

I am not 100% sure about the nestucca at the mouth but in tidewater it doesnt open for chinook until the first of Aug. You may want to check the regs before fishing for salmon. However the river is open for Steelhead year round. images/icons/smile.gif just my 2cent images/icons/grin.gif

A few words of warning. The nestucca is a great crabbing bay but the channell is tight in places. Run it at low tide the first time and if you have a GPS mark the channel for the way back. Should be good crabbing and you might as well throw a pole out if it is open for chinook who knows you might get lucky.
