If you can hike the path back up with a backpack filled with fish, Crater Lake in late Sep. untill the snow flies is for you!

The Nat'l park fishing rules are, No license, No bate, No limit! No personal boats are allowed on the lake, that includes floats.

In my past life I worked for Crater Lake Co. for five years and fished the lake often. The kokanee in the spring is off the hook hot! I only used two split shot with bare hooks from the dock area. It is very possible to fill two 5 gallon buckets in less than one hour! Best time of year is from the time the path down is opened though mid July. The fish are 10" and taste great!

But the real fun starts after Labor Day when the tour boats are put away . The trout like to chase blue fox, but attack count down Rapalas! Avg. fish is around 18" and the meat is like a cohos! In 2001 we did not get any snow until late in Nov. On my best day I got to make two trips up and down to pack out my fish!

This fishery is a real treat for the family. The fish will bite all summer and if you can hike the rocks on the island give it a try! I have seen more little ones take fish that would make the most seasoned trout fisherman proud!

Take a bag for the guts, the Rangers don't like seeing the remains left behind. The cold water preserves the waste for weeks.

I can't wait to bust a lung this fall!!

Thank you for this informative post, Masty. This is a fishery that a lot of us have overlooked. There was a good post about Crater Lake on the fly fishing forum too. I can't do very much hiking anymore but this sure would be worthwhile. Like the country song goes: "I'm not as good as I once was... but for one time I'm as good as I ever was." ;)

This would be a great trip for the scenery alone and some nice trout would be an added bonus.

You are welcome Dullhook!

Back in the day that darn hike only hurt the first few trips! It would take me about 45 minutes at the beginning of the season and by the end of the season I was making is back in 20 minutes. The younger boat pilots would RUN it in under 10! I can tell you, I could track elk for miles by the fall!

FYI the path is 1 & 1/8 mile at 15% grade.

And I was not snagging the Kokes, they would fight for the sinkers! I always wondered what they would do to a herring gig?

Good post Masty!
I've wondered what the regs were for fishing at Crater. Not sure what 15% grade is, sounds pretty steep, but for only a little over a mile, it wouldn't be too bad.

Yeah, it is not long and the worst part is right at the start. Lots of good spots to take a break and enjoy the views on the up!

The path drops 700ft in that mile an a 1/8 = 15%

I think I'll be taking a trip down there a little later!
