I can't vouch for herring but a small piece of sandshrimp tail.... images/icons/wink.gif images/icons/wink.gif images/icons/grin.gif

The U-20 flatfish is a finicky kind of lure. It is fairly small and takes very little to screw up its action. I wouldn't think you could get a straight dive out of one with a bait wrap on it. But apparently steelhead are attracted to baits of some kinds as this year many of those fishing the mouths of the Lewis and Cowlitz are using prawns. Never seen that used much before.

I like to pin a sandshrimp (tail only) on the belly hook of U20 flatfish. Just kinda wrap it around the shank of the treble and put all three hook points thru it, if you can, but two points will do. Doesn't seem to bother action much. Then rub shrimp oil on the lure, leader, dropper, and sinker to lay out a good scent trail. Have caught steelhead on this rig on slack water waiting for tide to run lure just foating around down there!!!!! Good luck to ya.
P.S. Found seven steelies today for five fishers in 27ft of water on the Columbia today. Spin-Glos and prawns.

I like to put a generous amount of "Mikes Sardine gell" on U-20's. I think that might get the job done.

I plan to use the tried and true U-20 Flatfish to catch steelhead on the Columbia. Does anyone wrap these with herring strips and does it help or hinder the results? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks. S
