It's that time of year again. This fish are in close much earlier than last year. The Ocean is flat now and for the next fews days according to NOAA. I will post phone reports and first hand info as it becomes available. The gear is easily made (handlines), and I give lessons. Tuna is pretty tasty when you home can or smoke it. Not to mention fresh on the Q.

The best part is the way your boat smells the next day. Pheeooow!

I'm still looking for "how to's" on tuna fishing if anyone can help. I'm not really looking for a meat run just a good sporting trip with a few for the cooler. I'd like to have some fun on a rod and reel instead of running a hand line. Is it a surface thing, fast troll thing, go to temp change and throw the stuff out and hope to find them thing, rod with lots of line thing? I'd like to try this when the very short halibut opener comes in Aug. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Gregotis: Troll at 4 to 7 knots, with the lures about 40 to 60 feet behind the boat. 15 to 25 pound line works fine as long as the drags on your reels are good. There are no obstructions out there, so the fish just run and you wear them down...no need for heavy line. For that matter, 12 pound line is lots of fun.

Lures: Japanese Feathers or "tuna" feathers, best colors are blue/white combination, red/white combination, black/green combination. Other colors work too. Tuna feathers are about 6 or 7 inches long and have a lead or lead/plastic head and feather dressing. The head slides freely on the leader. Use a big double hook. Sevenstrand and Zuker are good brands.

Almost any big leadhead jig will work. I also like the "bonito" feathers. Also try cedar plugs.

The best water is clear, cobalt-blue 60 degress and up. Acceptable water is "clean green" at 59 degrees. Cloudy water is no good. Blind troll in good water and look for bait and birds.

There is an enormous body of literature (magazine articles, books etc) written about albacore fishing in San Diego. The game is the same up here. Email me if you have any questions. Good luck

Hi Gregotis98. Tinman nailed it in the post above. Here's a little local info on what worked on this past Saturday.

1) Troll fast, we were running 7 to 10 MPH.

2) Two color combos were deadly, Purple/Black and Red/White.

3) Don't dis the handlines. They always went off first and then the standup rods.

4) Don't stop when you hook up. Circle towards the fish and slow to 5 MPH. The other fish will hit the remaining gear you are dragging.

5) Plan on hours of fileting, canning and boat cleaning, the limit is 25 a fisher and the catching is easy.

6)Cobalt blue water is the color. As soon as we found the blue 60 to 61 degree water we found the commercial fleet and the 2 and 3 on at once action.

Tuna is good!

Ok twist my arm. Then we can do a field 'Practical'. Krystalflash can demo the proper facial expression to wear when flipper is burning 300 yds of line in 30 seconds and I can demo three on at once or the hopping fish box lid/tuna tattoo. I'll get back this evening and tell you more.

Right now I'm looking for a phone booth so I can get into the blue and red outfit. My job is demanding and duty calls.

Pilar and Mr F. let me know if you are going to do the clinic thing. I bought 5 seven strand tuna feathers Red/white (2) Purple/Black (1), Mex flag (1) and Blue/White (1). Three seven strand tuna feathers 6 3/4 " by 1.75 oz and Two seven strand tuna clone feathers 6 1/2 " by 2.5 oz.
Now I need to know what hooks I need and what Mono I need and line capicty on my reels and what reels do I need.
Rods I have three tuna rods Ugly sticks and one a seeker and one Kenia killer Lamisnap.
Now just gotta figure out those hand lines.
God I can't wait is Santa here yet. I'm gonna loose sleep over this trip. I hope the ocean gods are nice to us. OOPS broke rule #1 won't happen again.
