From a pamplet I received from Project Healing Waters:
"Never have I felt less in control of my life as I did when I arrived at Walter Reed Army Medical Center with wounds and injuries sustained in Afghanistan.
It is through events such as a day on the river fly fishing that has allowed me to regain some control over my life and limbs. Any day on the river is a good day. The pain goes away, and for a while I am allowed to be one with Nature.

With the suicide rate of returning soldiers climbing drastically, are you ready to volunteer your fishing experience, and show your willingness to help your fellow American?

I don't know a lot about fly fishing, but we can make this happen in Oregon. I know its needed, but I can't do it alone.

And a reminder that not all injuries are external. This is a photo of Kevins services in Iraq. He is in the picture, surrounded by comrades from the NW, most from Oregon, that loved and admired a truly great friend.
I know their pain.

I've known of ProjectHealingWaters.org for some time. I am listed on their links http://www.projecthealingwaters.org/links.htm, although I have not heard from anyone finding me there, but that was nice of them.
I received a letter from Chris in the Angler Ed dept. at ODFW today. He met the project coordinator Eivind Forseth recently at a fly fishing show in Montana, and sent me the info, he knew I would be interested.
The pamphlet he sent is new, and says they want to expand nationwide at Vet centers.
It was started by members of Trout Unlimited and Federation of Fly Fishers.

Man, this sounds like an awsome cause. This is something that is inspiring and somethng I could see myself wanting to get into someday. Fishing is good, but helping other get the feeing of being on the water is so much better. I'm gonna do a little more research on this. Thanks for the heads up.

I just discovered PHW is modeled after www.CastingforRecovery.org (http://www.CastingforRecovery.org) a fly fishing program for women survivors of breast cancer. They have been at it for over 10 years, are nationwide, and just had a couple of events in Oregon.

Mitch,
Let me know how I can help. My truck, boat, rods, flies, waders, time, and anything else needed are at your disposal. One of my dearest friends is a BK amputee who would also be interested in helping folks get over the hump.
It's the least we can all do to honor the sacrifices made by these brave men and women.

OK, these folks are now interested in getting things going here in Oregon. If you can help, or know someone that can, please chime in. I have been contacted by the recreation director at the Vet Home in The Dalles for you fishers in that area.
Thank You.

Welcome to ifish. Thank You for your offer of assistance.
I lost my buddy Kevin in IRAQ in April 2005to a roadside bomb.
Thus my moniker about his driftboat.
