As any usual Sunday, Steve picked me up just before 5:30 am and we traveled to Lost Creek Lake and launched at the marina. Went around the corner to the north and threw our stuff in. Steve caught the first couple of fish as I was fiddling with my pole trying to get some rats nests out of the reel. Lead core line is really weird stuff. We trolled up to Red Rock with some success. Steve with ford fender and wedding ring and gulp worm and I had brought in the lead core line and got out the downrigger and put my stuff down at 50 feet and did well. The fish were a little 'furry' but I learned that a brillo pad takes care of that and the scales. I took 6 home and am freezing them as we speak and will have them in the smoker next Friday night. Here is a photo of the fish and my two grandsons.

Nice Feesh!
That is a fun lake to fish. Lots of different kinds of species mingled together!

Yes it is a great place to fish. In the past I have caught small mouth bass and an occasional landlocked Chinook, but for some reason the Chinook are missing. I haven't caught any since last spring. I haven't heard if they quit stocking them or what. and with all the concentration on Diamond Lake even the planters are fewer than usual. Hmmmmm makes you wonder.

Went to Lost Creek yesterday. Got on the water 11:00 am and threw our stuff in right away and trolled the east shoreline. Caught a couple of dinks [5 or 6 in fingerlings] using the small silver dodger and yellow wedding ring and chunk of Gulp nightcrawler. The fish finder was marking a lot of fish as usual up to the big point, then up the channel and under the bridge. Steve caught a nice one just above Red Rock and then we started getting into them about halfway up to the "falls" in what I have always deemed the "Dead Zone". The water temp was 51.3 to 51.5, and the air temp was "T-shirt!".
Around 3:15, I finally broke the needlefish curse and caught my 5 on a #1 needle fish in 'fire tiger' colors, tipped with the small tail end {1/2 inch piece just for scent} of a gulp nightcrawler,on leadcore line out 4 1/2 colors I had used everything in the tackle box and put the needle fish on as a joke. I've tried them before with no luck but had a lot of others report that they caught fish that way, so what the hey? The first one I got into was a nice 13 1/2 incher, I was so surprised when my pole went down I thought that I had snagged the bottom, but when it came back up and started doing the fish wiggle then I started doing the FISH DANCE, whatever that is, and then Steve started catching them about the same size, on a trolling rig with #14 gold treble hook and small piece of Gulp nightcrawler. We only caught one with a lot of parasites on him, and the rest were nice and clean. We worked the sun/shade areas and that seemed to get the best results until the sun went down and then we decided to go in.
Pulled out at about 4:45. I have always wanted to fish the evening but the weather and circumstances have always prevented it. Now I will be sure to try it again and hope for good results, again. Fall fishing is GOOD.

Oh yea, we as usual, forgot the camera.

Steve and I went to Lost Creek yesterday. In the staging area we put up full canvas, top, side windows and back wall with zipper door. I fired up the heater as we launched at Noon and there was no one else there. We trolled west right out of the marina and marked some in 70 to 80 feet of water. There was a light drizzle, and the water temp was 48 deg. We trolled around near the floating restroom and started getting some hits, and Steve reeled in a nice 14" rainbow. There were only a few parasites on him but he went back in because both our freezers have enough fish in them. Oh and we were practicing CPR.

He was using his trolling rig that he always uses and a #14 gold treble hook with glitter rainbow power bait. I had on my 4/0 silver dodger with yellow wedding ring and a #8 bait holder with 1/2 nightcrawler, I reeled it in and put on power bait too and started getting hit. Rain was heavier, and a little breeze with it. We trolled the points westward past the restrooms and and Steve caught 3 more and I managed to hook 2 and then it was 3:00 and we had to come in because Steve had a dinner engagement with his wife at 5:00. It was snowing on all the taller hills above the lake and the rain slowed to a drizzle again as we pulled the boat out. We were very comfortable as long as the heater was going, and I realize how spoiled I am getting.
This might be the last trip for the year, who knows?

My friend Ron and I along with my grandson, put Ron's boat in at Lost Creek about 10:30am yesterday. As you know the weather was fabulous. Water temp was about 45 degrees and we threw our stuff in and trolled right from the boat ramp west towards the floating restroom. I started off with a small silver dodger, and wedding ring with a piece of 'Gulp' nightcrawler. I put a green/frog flatfish on Caleb's pole and Ron was using a real nightcrawler. We went all the way to the rest rooms without the slightest nudge. Of course with a 6 year old you have to stop and use the 'facilities'. After that we again trolled west from there hitting the points, and I had a nice takedown but no hookup. I changed Caleb's rig to a small spinner type troller and a yellow wedding ring with some powerbait and he managed a hookup with 11 inch rainbow. I so love the looks on kids faces when they catch and boat a fish all on their own. After a second pass by the restrooms, and a sandwich and stripped down to T shirt, we turned east and trolled by the rock bluff and turned north by the island, we decided to go up towards the bridge. About halfway to the bridge, a nice 14 inch trout grabbed my offering (Rainbow Powerbait), and I managed to get him in the boat. Ron was doing a great job of driving the boat but wasn't able to connect with any fish. He just got his new boat in December and this is the first time I have been able to go with him. By this time it was 3:20 and we decided to call it a day. By noon there were a LOT of boats on the lake roaring up and down making noise and general nonsense, but all in all it was a good day.

Sunday morning Steve and I ventured to our favorite place and we launched at 8:00 and we threw our stuff in and started trolling upriver towards Peyton Bridge. Marked a bunch of fish about ½ way up to the “Big Point” and ran through them 4 times and no bites. Kinda makes you want to go “Hmmmmmmmmm??” Then we decided to try around the floating rest rooms and Steve hooked into a nice hold over from last year about 16 inches. We ‘CPR’d that one and went for more.

I managed to hook one, looked great till he came undone as I was lifting him into the boat. That way I didn’t damage him. We worked that area for about an hour and then decided to go to Red Rock. There was nothing at all there, no marks on the finder either. Water temp at Red Rock, 41.7, we decided to try the Lost Creek arm and nothing there either, so back to the rest room area and scored again, twice each. Water temp around the floating restrooms was 42.9 to 43.2. Then the bite was off and we decided to drag some stuff deep in the old river channel, I think this was just for practice. We marked a few at the 90 to 100 ft level, but could not entice them to bite. I know, I know, too cold. We worked our way down to the dam and trolled across the face and back and decided that we had had enough.

We pulled out about 4:10 and came home. Just another day in “PARADISE!”

Last night I checked the weather report and was not too impressed, but when I got up this morning and ventured out to Ray’s to deposit my paycheck and get the snacks, it looked like there was a chance that it wouldn’t rain. We had to leave town about 9:00 but at 8:15 it got the better of me and I called Steve and told him to come get my grandson and me, we were ready. As we ventured up Hwy 62 near the Butte Falls Junction the little tell tale drops started hitting the windshield. Then I looked at the hills north east of u and they really looked white. We pulled into the launch area and nothing was sticking but it was snowing pretty good. We launched, lit the heater, and immediately threw our stuff in and started to troll north along the shore in about………Wait ……. The faithful fish finder would not come on…………Oh NO!! I fiddled with the wires on the battery and still nothing. When I looked up, I could not see out the windshield, it was a white blanket. Well we just fished on like nothing was wrong.

No bites until just before the big point and Steve had one hammer his stuff and got him in the boat.

We made about 5 passes up and down the shore in about 50 to 55 feet of water at 45.5 degree temp (water). Of course it was snowing profusely now, and we fished on. Caleb had a nice hit, then a good hookup and reeled him in.

Then suddenly the bite quit and we decided to try over by the floating restroom. We rounded the corner and headed due west and threw in our stuff again. Caleb had changed to a frog pattern F-4 flatfish and got hooked up immediately.

This kid is a “FISHERMAN, FIRST CLASS”.

I finally gave up on the stuff I was drowning and changed to the same as Caleb and caught a couple and then he gets another one.

Between the floating restroom, and the shallow islands towards the marina, we caught and released 7 nice trout between the three of us. Funny though, some were fin-clipped and some were not. All were 12 to 13 inches. The last one I caught was kind of weird; it looked like it had been in the live well for several hours. Its markings were very faint almost translucent. Kind of makes you want to go hummmmmmmmmmmm. About 2:15 the snow let up a little and the you could actually see the boat ramp. We were all getting a little cold and so we decided to go home. Great day fishing, catching photo-ing and releasing.Got home about 4:00.

I got up early and got everything ready and Steve picked me and the boat up at 5:25am.

We launched at 6:02 and started trolling around the shoreline in about 50 to 60 feet of water. The water temp was about 48 degrees and the air temp was "COLD". I lit the heater and that helped a lot. The fish finder was pretty quiet and we were not getting any bites. We went to a little shallower water, about 30 to 40 feet and the water temp came up a little. We got close to the 'Big Point' and the fish finder finally started talking. Then Steve hooked one on his Panther Martin trolling outfit with a real worm and he came unlatched at the boat. It looked like a about 11 inches. Then I got into one about the some as Steve's and it came loose too. I was using a new fangled thing that I made myself and thought that I really had something. We got a lot of hits and stolen bait but we kept trying. At about 8:45 the sun came over the trees and the fish quit biting. We ran down to the rock wall due west of the marina and trolled towards the floating restroom. Steve caught a pretty nice 12 incher and boated it and released it. As we rounded the point SW of the restrooms, the fish finder screen went blank and would not come back on; IMMEDIATE PANIC!! I crawled under the dash and wiggled all the wires, and still nothing. I noticed that the negative wire had tape on it and wondered why, so I unplugged it from the lug and pulled on the wire and it came out of the lug way too easy. Steve performed surgery on the lug and got it opened up enough to put the wire back in and scraped it clean, it was pretty corroded. Then we re-crimped it, plugged it back in and VOILA!! Boy that was almost a CATASTROPHY. Then we ventured around the point and across the big cove towards Lost Creek cove and Steve hooks one and says "This one is pulling pretty good.", then I hook into a nice one too and we had fun playing a double. I reeled mine up and netted it then dropped it onto the floor of the boat, and went after Steve's fish. I almost dropped it out of the net but finally got it in the boat.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b143/dirtduderick/04-12-08-001.jpg

This is the results of the Double. The big one is 15 1/2" and mine was 13".

We went on around the point and back into Lost Creek Cove and fished it pretty good. I managed to catch one in the creek and then nothing.
We decided to try up at Red Rock and ventured up there and when we arrived we had some friends follow the boat for about half a mile then hopped out on the outcropping at red rock cliff.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b143/dirtduderick/04-12-08-008.jpg

They just stayed right beside to boat for a long time. It was really great.

We made several loops at Red Rock and had a couple of hits but no hook-ups.

We trolled up-river passed the falls and got nothing so about 3:30 we started for home.

It was a great day on the water, actually it was almost uncomfortably HOT!
I baked 4 Fish for dinner and they were exceptional.

Another nice Saturday in the weather report, and of course you know what is going to happen. Got to the launch at 6:25, and surprise surprise, no one else there. I was thinking that is kind of weired because the high lakes that opened today are still iced in, oh well. Anyway we launched and of course the early morning wind was blowing down the river and we trolled up to the 'Big Point' and no bites and nothing on the finder. We made a couple of circles around the point and Steve had a nice take down but no hook up. The fish Finder was real quiet, so we decided to go over towards the floating restrooms, and along the rock wall right after the shallow area Steve caught a nice one in the drop-off into the deep water, an nice 15 incher We worked the 32ft contour line on the map and as we rounded the last point before the cove where the restrooms are , my pole went down and the results were a very nice 15 1/2 inch rainbow. Nice fish! According to the magic formula and weather report the fishing was OK to Good around 10:30 to 11:30 and we were not disappointed. We manages 5 nice ones, in the 15 inch range during that time frame and then nothing. We trolled along the west shoreline down to the dam and made a couple of pass along the face of the dam and it was 2:00 and we decided to break and come home. The weather was great and the fishing was great and the catching was OK too, another great day in paradise. :meme:

I watched the local news last night and Lost Creek Lake finally developed the nasty "toxic algae bloom", so I guess I won't be going there this weekend. It usually lasts for a couple of weeks then settles back to normal, but if we don't get some rain, it may last a little longer.
