I've been fishing the sandy the last few weeks and am getting frustrated! The places I've been fishing it have been loaded with fish. Been seeing 15-20 everytime out, but without a hook- up. Been floating eggs, shrimp, and drifting blue foxes. With no rain in the forecast, I either have to find a way to catch some fish in these low water conditions, or move on to summer steelhead down lower on the river. Any help of success stories would be great, thanks!

i've been putting in my time at oxbow for the last few weeks and have nothing to show for it myself. some of the guys i've seen out there have taken fish, but it's been running hot and cold these days, mostly cold. one guy took a summer steelie one on a blue fox, another got a summer and a chinook drifting sand shrimp. all were taken later in the evening. daylight is your nemesis during the summer.

with the river running as glacial as it is these days, i'd recommend sticking with bait and darker colors for corkies or spin-n-glows. my experience has been eggs on the lower river, shrimp up high for chinook. black spinners in a #2 or #3 are also a fair bet. some days, they just don't bite at all.

Yes, I can sincerely empathize. I've been putting in a ton of time at Oxbow/Cedar Creek as well. I've also seen a ton of fish - but have not had any hook ups. It's always the guy next to me who hooks the fish. I've seen most of them hooked on spoons of varying sizes and colors. I've been trying smaller copper/brass with the glacial silt, but have had no luck. I've seen most fish hooked before 10:00 a.m. I think it's best to avoid high sun hours.

Can anyone tell me if the Oxbow gates lock at 9:00 - the 'legal' sunset? Or can you stay until the real sunset. Thanks, MJ

they lock the gates at sunset, whenever your favorite weather site says sunset is that day. the ranger usually shows up at the boat ramp with a bull horn and announces "fifteen minutes till you get locked in." you can always pay the $13 to camp overnight, though. that way you get an extra hour in the evening and a bunch of time in the morning when the gates are still closed.
