I had a nice day on the Deschutes below Maupin on Friday, 7/6. River was at 3900 cfs, 60 degress. Light breeze. The evening hatch started at 8:15 pm. I coaxed a nice redside - 15"+ on a #18 blue wing olive emerger. With one exception, I usually do nto match this evening summer hatch - on a good night I usually get one fish to take if I just keep switching patterns. These fish are awesome when hooked. Took me well into my backing. During the heat of the afternoon, I took a couple of smaller redsides on a bead head pheasant tail fishing the riffles. Don't be afraid to try the heavier water. The trick is to constantly mend your line. The trout are there.
I know this is a late report. My purpose for posting is that many of the official reports for the Deschutes this time of year is slow fishing. That is good, really keeps the pressure down. I was by myself the whole afternoon, evening till dark. The fish are there and feeding and you always have a shot at a 15-20" fish. And the surroundings. I will take slow all summer.
