View Full Version : If you could change one thing on your boat..

I often (OK all the time) wish I would have spent the extra money and got more motor.

Being in Waterdogs new Motion Marine outback today I know what I would want changed on that boat. The open bow is huge compared to my boat. I really liked the storage up front for clam shovels, anchor, shrimp gun, bouy, anchor puller, lunch pail, kitchen sink etc.... And overall the boat was really nice, must be nice having one of those big paying jobs images/icons/wink.gif Anyhoo, the drain holes out of his boat are two of the same thing my boat uses for a gas tank vent. If we would have taken a big wave over the bow this morning, I think it would still be draining this evening. images/icons/frown.gif My boat has about 1.5 inch pipes out each side and I wish they were bigger. Seeing those little drain holes at the dock this morning as we were launching got me thinking about this thread.

If it wasnt more horsepower for my boat it would have to be more length and width. Maybe air ride seats, passenger wiper, dual batteries, wash down system, higher sides, Oh ya I said one thing. Lets leave my number one boat modification at more HP.

What would you change?

Bait I hear you!! My last fishing trip got me Wanting size and horsepower from the boat. As much time as guys like you and I spend on the water it sure would be nice to be safe. Spooked myself good when the waves were spilling over the front and back.. images/icons/shocked.gif I will be getting something larger before I kill myself trying to catch a fish, that is if I win the lottery images/icons/rolleyes.gif Life on the edge images/icons/confused.gif

Hey B.O.E., I don't usually respond to your posts cuz they usually make me think more than I would like... images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/rolleyes.gif images/icons/shocked.gif But this one is easy, I have had the opportunity over the years to work on design of my boats...but I still cannot figure out how to store my net fully extended and yet out of the way...I have a 21' open boat...any ideas will be welcome!! OH...I don't like it sticking straight up!!

Great question B

Nothing, my boat is PERFECT!! images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/wink.gif images/icons/rolleyes.gif

The only thing I want is a larger boat. Some where around 50 to 65 feet to cruise the inside passage and southeast Alaska for the entire summer. That's my dream. I'll be joining the PGA tour soon and give Tiger a run for his money to finance this dream. images/icons/cool.gif

Jim, I store my net along the side edge resting on the floor, hoop facing towards the stern and handle tucked between seat boxes and side, handle points to the bow. Keeps the net out of the way and easily reachable. I also don't like the net flapping in the breeze hanging straight up.

BOE, your in luck. I heard the city commisioners are condeming your boat. Something about an ordinace banning offensive odors and you'll be able to file for federal disaster relief once they cart off your boat. Hope they give you enough money for a new crab catcher. images/icons/tongue.gif

Those bow drains suck. I’m going see what it’s going to take to change that this week. I’m going to add two more rod holders so I have more positions. Other than that I like the way it’s set up for my use. After the third boat you get an idea of how you want and use it. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

I'm with you BOE, more motor!!! Have a 115 with a pump, wish is was a 150 with the pump. Great with 2, 3 is sluggish and I won't even try 4. Other than that I like it, pretty good all around boat.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif

at this point, even a junky old boat would look great in my driveway. i'm still looking for that old tub that needs lots of work. these days, i have more time than money to spend on a boat.

The bow,

My next boat will not be an open bow. I like getting out into Big Blue too much to risk it.

It will also have more water line and at least as much horsepower, 2 of everything, more electronics, and it'll be more fishable.

Roy, I'm going shopping and balming you for this.... Wait till you meet the wife....

has anyone ever had a cover made for an open bow boat out of heavy duty material, ive been thinking of getting one made and not use snaps but use the little posts that the canvas snaps over ?? also i`m happy with my tub, has been a good boat so far.

Definatly bigger open bow drains. Those nice Shock absorber swivel captains seats and the baitgirl sounds good too. Oops. I was just kidding dear.

One last item, a better catch to trip ratio.
but thats not the boats fault. images/icons/grin.gif

wish list for the boat-

.50 cal machine gun mounted on the bow. That would solve a lot of problems. I like the bait girl idea...thats a must. A hot water sink to wash my hands and plugs in. All the toys that Slutgoddess has on his Northriver. What else is there.

Hi Jawbreaker! Thanks for the kind words!

Must say that My wife points out every time we go out that we do not have a microwave oven on board.....I tell her to find a way to convert the port-a-potti to one!!!

Several here that I agree with...

1. Bow drains is a big one.
2. wish I had a 15 H.P. not a 9.9....9.9 is O.K. 95% of the time.
3. Good way to store net?
4. Wash down pump.

To those with under powered boats....I have said for years....."there is no such thing as a overpowered jet boat" Demo rides never have all the coolers and gear or happen in real big water like Hell's canyon. My advice is never to go on the low side for engine and pump. You will regret it at some point.

A topless female bait girl would be nice. I've asked for one for Christmas for a few years but the wife can't seem to find them at Fishermans.

Seriously, the bow scupper issue above is an important one in my opinion. I had NR put extra large ones in my new boat. I've taken a hundred plus gallons over the bow more than once (I think I remember that water weighs 8 lbs per gallon? - that's a lot of weight on the bow of your boat when you're in rough chop) and within 5 seconds another 100 gallons came over - those bow scuppers save lives. Make sure you don't have a pop can or rope up there to plug them up if you get into rough water.

If its not broke, don't fix it. Only thing I'd do is spend money on fancy seats and a top. Maybe add another mount for a sport troll and maybe look into a live well.

Nah, I'd just sell my soul and get the big Grady White with everything on it. Somebody else could learn to love my boat when I sell it to them.

Now what in the world would I name that new boat?

Paul, Worms man Worms! LOL.

http://voll.dynamisch.de/gifarchiv/menschen/hillbilband.gif

Ok. Very small ruby red beads or lime green beads. #3 or #4 blades. #1 Treble. I use a clevis which allows me to change to any size and color when I want. Backbounce in the current, put it in the rod holder when you find a good place that's really turning your spinner blade.

"If in doubt, put the Bluetip Rainbow out." "Copper and Red makes the Salmonoid dead." I spinner fish. There are many folks on here who hammer em' with various plugs, like the kwik or flat fish variety.

Use what you have confidence in. I've shared a couple that have been tried and true. We fun around, but I like to see EVERYONE catch fish. images/icons/wink.gif

******,

I realize you have been collecting for years, but I have been to three different fishing supply stores and nobody has the selection of blades you do. What is a good source for blades. Tried fishermans and GIJoey. not much of a selection at all. No red, or blue.

A boat that comes with instructions that state: Just ad water to gain size, 1 oz. per foot of boat in length.

Problem would come when you took a wave and you suddenly found yourself alone aboard an aircraft carrier. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

LMAO! images/icons/grin.gif Hey Tuna Skipper, thats what I'm talkin' about. You'll get some respect on the high seas with the USS Fisherprice. (Batteries not included) lol.

Slutgoddess - Yes of course, how could I have forgotten the microwave for those quick meals on the go. images/icons/rolleyes.gif images/icons/grin.gif A washdown pump is definitely a must.
