I just thought of something! DUH!
Some of the most fun I've had is Jetty fishing off of the big jetty.
I'll never forget fishing there once, with the kids and my present hubby.
Actually, they weren't fishing. They stayed on the other side on the beach, built a fire and played in the sand.
I got up there on the rocks, asked the guys if they were fishing top or bottom. Of course, they thought I was alone and helpless. They said bottom. I could see fish on top! They said they hadnt done any good.
So I fished the top with a bobber.
Needless to say, FISH ON!
So I cleaned and threw one salmon down to the fam.
FISH ON AGAIN! So I threw it down to the fam.
O.K., got my limit and the guys are tying up bobbers and ignoring me.
I found a wad of mono in the rocks, took some salmon guts and threw it over with a 10 ounce weight.
CRAB ON!
So I threw it over to the kids.
CRAB ON!
So I threw it over to the kids.
4 crab and two salmon later, I joined them at the fire.
I used to have this 10 foot awesome jetty netty to use to net those fish. It is scary getting down there in between the waves.
I have nearly been washed off.
Hard, also, to catch the fish and expect the non catching guys next to me to help me net them. Doesn't work that way all the time.
So, I want to go!
It IS open, isn't it? The ocean side? Except for Friday and Saturday?
I wanna go go go!
I forgot all about this fishery, living down South here.
Anyone want to join me? Who has got the jetty netty now? Mine was donated to the Nehalem Hatchery for the handicapped ramp. It's long since gone now.
Sunday? Monday? images/icons/smile.gif images/icons/smile.gif images/icons/smile.gif

Hey Jen,
I'm heading up to Ft. Stevens next weekend with the fam, I could use an experienced jetty guide then images/icons/smile.gif

Can you provide details about jetty fishing, I'm curious to try it but don't know how to fish it. I'm an avid drift boater but the jetty has not been in my sights.

Can you help ?

Maybe I'll come down and meet you and help!
I have to play for church in Warrenton next week.
How to do it?
I either fish the bottom or the top, depending.
Bobber, of course, is like any other kind of river coastal bobber fishing. Use a sliding adjustable knot, etc, but use a herring.
I rig herring for land fishing differently than for boat fishing. I have a diagram, darned if I can find it though.
It's somewhere here on the board. I'll do a search on it.
I thread it with a threader, through the vent, and up through the mouth. I then take a hook I have rigged up, with about 8 inches of line and looped on the end. Grab the loop with the threader, bring it back through and put a couple half hitches around the tail. The hook should be buried in the mouth and hidden quite nicely.
Then I attach the loop to a swivel on the main line.
There is a bobber on the main line, about 1 or 2 feet up, to hold the herring off the bottom.
On a triple swivel, above that, I have a 8 to 10 ounce weight.
Confused? This is why I don't write tech articles!

An 8-10 ounce weight? Why is it necessary to use that much weight? To keep the bobber from moving? That's got to take a big stick-one that I probably don't have-to throw that much lead?? images/icons/confused.gif

Sometimes I get away with 6, but the current is very swift there, and you play "Please keep off the grass" constantly on strong outflows.
Believe me... you'll need it!
Oh! I found the thread about the drawing I did.
Here it is! (http://www.ifish.net/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=003203)

This was for springers, but same set up.

Hey Jen,
This sounds very interesting. I've never been Jetty fishing before, I'd love to try it. I have a weekend pass from the wife so Sunday could work for me.

I don't know Jen...Me and a buddy went out to the jetty last year and discovered a jetty that has changed greatly from the late 80' to the early 90's. I got kinda nostalgic last season after having not fished the south jetty for 6 or 7 seven years. The jetty is spread alot wider then it used to be and it is difficult finding a spot to fish off the bottom. Maybe a bobber and some heavy weight may work off the surface. Be prepared to cast.

Don't walk out too far, there was a spot that I'm sure is submerged at high tide about half-way out to the elbow. I think that flooding in 96' or something must have taken a toll on the jetty?

If you go out, let me know how you did.

Jennie, is there another float above the weight besides the cork float down by the bait? You're not fishing on the bottom, right? I looked at the diagram but I still don't get it. Maybe I'm just dumb. images/icons/blush.gif

Thank you! The explanation was hard to decipher, but your diagram cleared it up. Sounds like a lot of fun. I guess it would work in Newport too. I have ten kids who love fish!
