I have been meaning to ask this one for a long time. How fast is your boat? I thought it would be interesting to get a lot of data on different set-ups. Describe your boat, motor and how fast it will go with a normal load. I am going to post this on some different sights and compile a list, which I will post later.

I will start:
1860 Jon boat, 45/60 Mercury jet – top speed 29 MPH per GPS

I don't know...
But Bill was lookin way too young one day, while traveling from the ghost hole back to the marina. The water was glassy, the wind calm... and I asked him,
"Uh, Bill, how fast are we going?"
He glanced down and said...
"uh... 64!"
YIKES!

Bill says:
The boat is an Alumaweld 18 foot Super Vee with a 175 horse sport jet.

Not being a bass fisherman, I don't care how fast my boat goes. I would guess about 20, but who cares? Our fish aren't as fast as those wily tournament bass anyway. I get there, I get back. If I'm in a hurry to do either, I don't go. Oh, 17 ft fiberglass, usually two occupants, 1966 50 hp Merc. for that ~20 mph.

I have a 15' flat bottom sled with a 1971 Mercury 50hp with a pump. Just like 'chnookie', my boat is not very fast. With myself and one other person in it, it will plane. Add a third person and it has a tuff time planing. Is this normal for this set up? The best part about this boat was the price, FREE, and it gets me out on the river to fish!

16' Spectrum 40HP gets me an average 28MPH (GPS) with 2 aboard. I notice I actually get another 1-2 MPH when I'm using it in the winter, even with additional load of heater and more clothing. I guess due to denser O2 in the air and/or Alcohol in the fuel.

Of course that's sea level, any altitude and the power drops off. At 5000ft I can hardly get up on a plane with the same prop.

I personally like Chnookie's response the best!

16' Willie Predator with 90 HP Yamaha Pump....No Clue. Probably 30-35 with a tail wind. I don't have all of those fancy GPS indicators...just a Aluminum Fishing Machine.

I guess fishing tournaments I know the faster the boat, the faster you get to the fish, and the faster you get to hit multiple spots. In a tournament, time is money.

16'x54" Willie Driftboat. About 75 when its on the trailer going down the freeway. With 9'6" oars the speed is just about perfect, slow and easy. With a 6 horse kicker, not fast enough. With an 8 horse kicker, about the same speed as the 6, The bow just goes higher. images/icons/wink.gif

1977 Bayliner Jamaica, 140hp 4cyl Chevy 181 Mercruiser I/O. Two of everything, 43 gal of gas and 4 people, 32mph (SOG by GPS) at 4200 rpm. I dont run that hard for long, usually 23mph at 3500 rpm for cruise. It gets 4 mpg at cruise. This gives me a range of over 100 miles with the CG recommended 1/3 tank reserve of fuel.

16' Alumaweld Sea Dory with 80hp Merc w/pump. Somewhat underpowered, but goes fast enough to get me to where the fish are.

2001 19' North River Sportster with 175hp Sportjet. I haven't pushed it too hard. Now you have me curious. I have 14 hours on it now, so I guess it is safe to test her now. The fastest I have pushed her was 45.5 according to the speedo on my X65. Next time out with good water conditions, I will give her the test and compare the X65 to my GPS.

23' North River with 250 Yamaha Saltwater Series - I need to run this thing by a radar gun because my Lowrance X-85 says 64, my speedo says 56 and my Lowrance GPS says 54. I'm guessing the GPS is the most accurate, and if it is, I'm kinda hacked that a $450 depth finder is 10 mph off!

Not fast enough....my 14 foot fiberglass couldn't get up the big waves and that was a scary ride!!! 25 mariner with 2 guys and gear. It does cruise along nice on a calm day ~20 mph or with just me.

The mini drifter speed depends on which way I am rowing and the wind. I think it may be close to the reading Os has with Nasa

The floatntote goes as fast as I can kick and row at the same time. Not quite strong enough to get it on plane yet.
