I have a couple quick questions regarding flushing my Yamaha 150 4-strk. When I bought the boat the dealer told me that I did not need to run the motor when flushing with the garden hose connector on the side of the engine. Is it ok to run the motor with the garden hose hooked up to this connector? will it do any better a job flushing the motor if it is running? A couple months ago I had the garden hose hooked up and was running the engine and the temp alarm went off. everything has been fine since but really scared me. Since then I only flush it not running.

look in your owners manual. I think that flush is only there to flush the lower unit of the motor. It does not flush the head. It is also meant to flush with the motor OFF.
To flush while running, get the elephant ear or suction cup kind that fits over yout lower units water intake...

If you flush your motor with the garden hose hooked on the adapter and turn your engine on, your just going to burn your impellar up. Your manual says not to run the engine. When I bought mine, I was told you could.... Read the manual.

:yeahthat: Use a set of ear muffs on the waterpump pickups , and don't forget to run it until it reaches operating temp and the thermostat opens or you won't get a complete flush around the heads...If ya got a freshwater launch ramp nearby its just as easy to use that...

You can do that until your motor won't pee water anymore. Course you only find that out after waiting in line at the boat ramp and then finally dumping your ride in the water only to trailer it back up again.
Use the muffs or don't crank your engine.

Does nobody read the manuals supplied by the manufacturer anymore?
Or are we all smarter than Yamaha?
It clearly says in the manual not to run the engine using the flushing adapter. If you want to run the engine, use the muffs.
Its pretty clear to me.

sorry for the misunderstanding. I looked at the (service) manual in the in the shop and page 1-52 section titled AFTER TEST RUN number 3 "Flush the cooling water passage with fresh water using the flushing kit and with the engine running at idle."
the owners manual may state differant for the owners protection

Well Marine511 thats news to me as far as I know the boys at the boat shop who are certified yami techs have told me . Never run the motor while using the flushing kit as it will not provide sufficient water to the pump resulting in faliure of the impeller... Sorry I think I'll listen to Andy ,Joe and Mike... Oh and also follow operating and maintenance instructions per Yamaha...
