Got a weird question I've been curious about lately.
Would any of you cataraft drifters ever use a boat with hard pontoons? I know I have seen some with hard plastic floats. Is there any benefit to hard versus inflatable? I've only use one once, and it was inflatable. Just curious what you experienced cat guys think.

There's no way I'd do it, unless it was on a lake or out in a bay. The rocks could crush those hard pontoons since they have little to no elasticity for moving around or on rocks.
I can't wait to see what the others say images/icons/shocked.gif

OK, theoretically, what if they were built like a drift boat? Not plastic, but something tough enough instead. Any handling issues?

Hard pontoons are BAD BAD BADDDDDDDDD. They're great for lake boats, but a no no on a river. As Ya'll had said, you hit a rock and you're in trouble. Plus, you have alot of extra weight to carry, thus sitting lower in the water. The key to a cat is to float high in low water. You're waterline would sink with the added weight. I've seen some of the hard plastic boats, but would be leary personally about using them.

Even though quality inflateable tubes are extremley rigid when inflated they still flex and give at times when you most need them to,to not allow any flex would be a bad thing for the frame and rider......Although I did like Marty's Idea for the KegCat........Os
