Is This Motor Worth using?

Several years ago my neighbor gave me a 1946? 5hp Johnson outboard motor that he said did run fine before being serviced and stored. He had taken it into Staff Jennings and they serviced it and removed the gas. It has not been run for at least twenty years.

Is it worth using and if so what should I do to it before trying to start it? Would 50-to-1 be the correct oil/gas mix?

I am thinking of using it on a 12’ to 14’ aluminum boat that I have yet to buy and then running it on the Willamette or small-protected water for bass fishing. This might give me an idea if I should buy a larger boat.

Thanks,

Jim.

WOW! What a great find. I love old motors. Does it turn over? if so fuel it up and see what happens. I would expect seals, gaskets possibly , condenser to be prone to failure. I would also take along a set of paddles regardless. Be sure water pump is working if you get it running. Never run dry. Could this motor be old enough to be a 20:1 MIX? Let us know what happens.

Thanks Blind Bobber,

I did find a good web site with lots of information on old motors. It looks like it would not be worth trying to get running as I could not turnover the motor. I will give you the motor if you want it. I live in West Linn, OR. My email is: jcook222@gmail.com. Let me know and I’ll give you my cell # so we can meet and you can pickup the motor. It is just one more thing cluttering up my garage and you are welcome to it at no cost. The web site for old motors is:

Just an FYI for everybody, Evinrude/Johnson motors from '64 back to about '55 use 24:1 fuel mix. '65 and up use 50:1. The older motors need more oil because they don't have needle bearings on the crankshaft.

If Blindbobber doesn't take it, I will gladly take it off your hands. I would love to tinker with it and try and restore it.

I live in Oregon City and work in Lake Oswego....and drive by West Linn every day on my commute.

Jim O'Leary

Hi Headhunter,

Looks as though Bobber is not interested in the old motor, so you are welcome to it. Email me and I’ll give you my address and you can stop by and pickup the motor. I’ll just leave it outside by the garage door and you can get it anytime even though I may not be home.

Jim.
