Was at Odell July 1-8, and after having mediocre luck with kokes, decided to make good on my intentions of finding some Odell Rainbows. It took very little time to figure it out, just find areas with rocky structure along the banks. Nailed a bunch of nice little 8-12 inchers all around the slide on the west end. And picked up the nice Bow in the picture near the cove. All i used were size 12 Tan elk hair caddis. It was awesome to land a fish like this on a 5wt. Also on this trip two different evenings I threw the tube in the truck and went across to fish Gold Lake for the evenings. This was my first time so I didn't know the tricks of this lake. Talked to a few guys that said stripping nymphs was how they were picking them up but it had been very very slow. I'm not much of a nymph fisherman I would much rather throw drys, so I put on a size 12 orange caddis (don't know why, i just like the look of em') and after about a half hour had my first strike and landed a beautiful 16 inch rainbow. i had 2 more strikes and connected but lost them shortly after, it's harder for a novice flyfisher like me to catch fish with barbless flies. I soon after caught 3 or 4 others. None smaller than 14 inches. one 18". Had a blast and noticed nobody else on the lake was picking any fish up at all, and they were all looking at me like I was crazy for fishing drys??? I felt pretty good about it. It soon got dark and there was fish rising EVERYWHERE but I couldn't figure out what they were taking....some tiny tiny little gnat of some kind is all i saw. My dad also landed and kept a nice 12 inch Brookie, bows are catch and release only. Lot's of fun.:)
