Bought a new boat in 2005 that came with a washdown pump which recently stopped working. I check the strainer and it was clear. I removed the pump from the mounting, took the bottom off, and the motor spun just fine, but when i attach the bottom section where the pump mechenism is located. The motor won't spin. Something is making the motor freeze-up.
Do i need to buy a new pump or am i overlooking an easy fix?
If i do need to buy a new pump, which brand and where to get the best deal would be great to know.
Thanks,
Eric

If you use it in the salt, two years is about right. They just don't hold up very long with the corrosion.

Is there a pump that holds up better for salt water purposes that isn't rediculuously priced?

Can you back flush in impeller section and or take it apart to clean it?
Sounds like the small plastic impeller is jammed up on something.

If there is one thing you want to work correctly 100.00% of the time it is the bilge pump.
If mine even hiccups, it's gone and a new one is there in its place.

That's good advice. Not valid here, but good advice.
Thanks for the reminder that I need to swap mine out.

My first pump lasted 10 years which surprised me. My second, the same brand, is working fine after 5 years. Its the "Blaster" by Shurflo that you find in all the marine stores. Best of luck!

I dont know what brand you have but my flojet that came with my Alumaweld was junk and died in the first year. I replaced it with the same pump and it died within a year. Went to West Marine and bought their brand pump (made for them by Shurflo) it is a 70psi blaster pump and it is sweet.

Possible it froze over the winter? You might be able to get a repair kit to replace the parts inside the pump. If you replace it get a 5gph instead of a 3.5gph. You will notice the difference. Mine is a Johnson on its 3rd year

Hey mine broke also and I bypassed the pressure switch on the pump and it works fine! I called the dealer of the pump and have a new pressure switch on order! Don't let pressure build up in the line if you bypass this switch tho - it could explode your lines....
