I'm trying to figure out ways to not thrash my hands during a trip to Alaska in the fall. I saw a guy use a Ketchum Release to release a salmon without even having to touch the fish. Anyone use this tool and how well does it work?

1. Nice avatar
2. I saw a guy messing with one of those and it didn't seem all that cool. You might try a pair of pliers for them big hooks and jaws.

Personally, I really like using mine and seldom use my forceps. I like it because I don't have to net, handle or remove the fish from the water to effect a quick release. You have to get the hang of using one (which is not hard) and once you do they're great. With that said, I also know a few guys that hate using them and are bummed they spent the money.

I use a smaller one all the time for trout. It's the slickest little tool for unhooking fish. Only drawback is you need the right size for the flies your using. I havn't used the new large one so I'm not sure what size hooks it will take. Also, if you're using bead or cone head flies you probably will have problems.
