I spent part of the day Thursday with Nick Amato of STS and got to tour the STS offices in Milwaukie. Nick is a great guy! His father of course is the owner/publisher of STS and one of the earliest catch and release of wild fish advocates here in the NorthWest. Mr. Amato has done a lot for our resource with his magazine and especially his strong support of NW Steelheaders and other sports fishing groups. Any of you familiar with STS know that it's more than just a regional fishing magazine. It's been a voice for the conservation of wild fish runs for many years. I have ran into Mr. Amato on the river a few times and he has always been a gentleman. I for one appreciate STS magazine and the strong support it has given our fisheries.

Stew you are right STS is a great magazine and Mr. Amato has been a great advocate for the fishermen. I have never been smart enough to actually get a subscription images/icons/smile.gif just by it every time at the store. I will now be ordering a subscription since I am canceling my F&H news. STS is a lot better and more fun to read.

For a new fisherman in Oregon and Washington I can think of no better publication than STS. I'm still using an old receipe for curing eggs learned from STS years ago. While I rarely buy the magazine anymore,a years subscription is well worth the money.

STS is the only freshwater fishing mag I subscribe to, and even 6 weeks late surface mail from the US of A I greet each issue with almost-trembling hands. An article by Dave Vedder or Bill Herzog is what I hope for, but I'll settle for just about anything with "steelhead" in the title. Nick Amato writes good stuff, too.
My only complaint is that it's not a monthly.

It's always been my favorite fishing magazine. I remember the effect many of the early articles had on some of my friends and I during the formable learning years. ... And I agree with you 'Stew, Nick is just a nice and down to earth guy - except when he gets behind the wheel of an Austin Healy 3000 stuffed with a custom tri-power V-8. images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/smile.gif

I was a subscriber for over 10 years. It was the finest mag for articles about steelhead and gave me up to date tech reports. Changed quite a bit when Franks son took over as editor and I stopped buying it. To many ads and just wasn't the same magazine.

You have the one decenting opinion SteelieSteve. I hope you check it out again and see some of the good things and changes Nick has done. It's a top notch mag, and it's good that the editor knows his stuff about fishing!

If I had to pick only one fishing related magazine to subscribe to then it would definately be STS! This magazine has set the standard that all other publications should be judged by.
It always has great how to articles and pictures that inspire you to get outside and do it!!!!!!!!!! images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif

I think STS is about as classy as it gets, for a Fishin' magazine. High quality pictures, print, and diverse article content. If fishin'folks are complaining about this publication, I'd consider it a litmus test, giving evidence that they would complain about anything.
I was honored when , oh my gosh...about 18 years ago ,now, they actually printed two of my stories. My wife still keeps copies of those magazines... images/icons/confused.gif ...do you think this might have been a low point in their publishing era??? images/icons/confused.gif
