How hard would it be to up the horse power of a 165 mercrusier.:bigshock:

Would I have to rebuild it or are there bolt-on things I can do??

This is a 1974 engine.

Replace it with something more common and more modern. I'm not sure what block that is, but I am thinking it's a Chevy block, with the same motor mounts as the V8s. A 350 would be a great bolt on.

How big of boat is it on? Back in the late 70's I used to fish bouy 10 with my dad and his buddy that had a 21' GlassPly cuddy with a 250 Chevy and it would flat get up and move. How long has it been since it's had a good tune up? If the compresson is good, apx. 120 PSI, new plugs, points, fuel filter ect may be all she needs. I'm not shure how the engine mounts into the boat but if the front mounts are on the front of the engine and not the side it will be a pain to put a small block V8 in it. The bellhousings are the same on all the Chevy marine engines but I'm thinking a V8 swap could get spendy real fast.

It is a 19' Reinell with a cuddy cabin. I am looking to buy it and I need to be able to pull the Kid (180 lb. and 6' 3'') around for fun.

Sounds like I should have enough power to do that?

It should do OK, as long as it's running right. From what I've seen, most people having trouble getting skiers up have the wrong prop.

Very good advice. You may need 2 props, one for skiing, another for cruising. Or one for both and watch your RPM's if running the lower pitch.
