I no longer have any influence with the administration here at Ifish (Jen + mods). But since I have done a lot for nearly 2 years within 3000+ posts (old and new DBs) to help create a good Discussion Board here, I will take the liberty to attempt a resolution thread to the latest round of conflict over policies and direction. Hope you will join me with your ideas. ...
For whatever it's worth - my resolution opinion:
Right at the heart of the matter is whether threads that are somewhat adult themed should be allowed - with the administration clearly saying no, with the support of many members, and many of the guys contending it's harmless benign fun ("boat talk" as we call it), and to just not click on it if you aren't interested. And to also lay off the quick deleting of strong opinionated critism threads that are kept reasonable. This was the main reason Jen and I couldn't work together anymore and I left to moderate Piscatorial for awhile (I recently relenquished that for a new opp). Similar things happened with the following moderator. Most of you regulars know this history, and it's time to put it to rest. ... Lately there has been an upswing in deleting threads that don't conform to the ridgid refined board rules. There has been a resultant backlash of protest, much of it deleted, against the new order. This open conflict has not resolved anything, and I don't think continuing it will. Time for another direction. ...
Jennie has regained some respect from me by holding to her DB agenda despite the backlash, highlighted by her post earlier today of "Honestly Ifish". In it she said "I choose not to have very much adult themed humor here, and I apologize for those that like that kind of thing. But that is the way I have decided to run it for now". She has stood up to what amounts to a mini rebellion here and remains standing with her forum and ideals intact. Fair enough and so be it. That has got to finally tell us that she means what she says and that's the way it is going to be; and to respect that. And I hope the others that have also rebelled to lay down the swords and just let it go . ...
She also said in that post to "Please handle personal conflicts through e mail and leave the rest of us to talk about fishing". Also fair enough! For harsh conflicts, especially that become personal, this is the best way to go - for both members and moderators. But there needs to be a way to communicate between 2 harshly conflicting members when e-mails aren't known or displayed. Suggestions for that? I'm not familiar enough with the 'Private Messaging' feature. Would it handle that obstacle? ... I also think milder disagreements discussed with civility can and should continue to be shared in threads. They are rightful expressions, and often beneficial. ...
As for resolving the issue of providing what everyone wants in a site I have this obvious piece of advise that will work nicely into what Jennie wants here. Simply keep the Ifish threads fishing related and G-rated. For those of us that would like to do that here but also engage in the fun "boat talk" banter then take those type threads to Piscatorial Pursuits (where the reasonably benign adult humor is allowed). Many of us belong to both sites, and you others can easily do that too. We can post family acceptable fishing related posts here and then click right over to the other BB and cut loose when and if we want to. Nobody has to choose only one site and post only there. ... Unless I'm missing some dynamics, this seems to be the solution that will end most of the bickering - at least over this big issue right now. ... I would also mention that Marty's site is a very good one too. And seems to be a nice compromise site concerning this issue. Check it out too. And please bring on any feedback to the ideas mentioned here and other solution ideas that you have. Thanks.
