View Full Version : Tillamook Area River Cleanup June 30th (plus jig clinic & BBQ

On the heels of the successful Wind river cleanup and BBQ I am organizing a similar cleanup event for the Wilson and other Tillamook area rivers on Saturday June 30th. RT and Bigstew will be helping me out with this event. We will meet at Mills Bridge fishing hole/parking lot behind the Guide Shop starting around 8:00 a.m. I will put on a short jig fishing clinic for summer steelhead, including what to use and how to use it. I will also be giving each person that attends a free jig and float to use, but bring what you like also. Light action steelhead spinning rods are good for this type of fishing. I will also bring lots of garbage bags to fill along with some gloves for trash pickup. Then we will break out into groups to go fishing and trash cleaning for around 3 hours at various popular fishing holes on the area rivers. After that we can meet again at the Guide Shop/Mills bar hole by around 11:00 Am. or so and pool our resources for a BBQ lunch on the river. Some of you can post what you will bring; including a BBQer, meat, chips, beverages, and condiments. If we need more food or whatever, we can pool some money and send some volunteers to the store (as they did at the Wind R. event). As an alternative for some people, the Guide Shop has a full deli menu too. For those arriving later we will put on a second jig clinic after the BBQ if there is enough interest. Since this is coming up in a week and a half, please sign up here by posting, or e-mail me at firstcastjigs@earthlink.net as soon as you think you can attend. Thanks. Mark, RT, and Bigstew.

These are just great events! Lots of both fun and function with the cleanup and jig clinic too. Yay Mark. And thanks Shane and John. I would add that any of you coming to fish the Wilson, Trask, or Nestucca rivers before we meet at 8:00 a.m. would do well to fish right from daybreak around 5:00 a.m. The 5 to 8 time slot is the best of the day for summer steelhead in all those rivers, and you can follow fishing a hole by some trash pick up. I bet we get some steelhead filets to butter up and season for the Q. Yum. And get some burgers too. Bring your own beer ... I mean beverages. And function within this event at your own risk. Bending over can be risky around those parts images/icons/smile.gif . Low back strains, etc., unless you use proper posture. This will be fun, informative, and cleansing all in one great event. I hope we get a whole bunch of people for this. ... Take care. - Steve

Won't be able to make it. Unfortunately I will be spending 5 days on the John Day River.
You guys fishin before the gig. Make sure you hit it early so you are off the river by the time people like me start hitting the summers, like say around noon or so. Got two last weekend on a Tillamook area stream 1 was caught right around noon and the other was caught around 2 P.M. Sun was shining all day.

I'll be there. It was good meeting the people who showed up at the Wind cleanup, and it'll be nice to do the same for some rivers that are closer to home. And if some one brings a video cam again maybe we can get Steve to say some more incriminating stuff on tape. I'm sure that fobbman is set for life after the blackmail over his tape that he made at the BBQ after the Wind cleanup. images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/tongue.gif
Besides, I wouldn't want to pass up the jig clinic. I've never even made a cast with a jig (targeting steelhead), but I hear these guys know a thing or two about jigs. images/icons/cool.gif
I've got a portable BBQ that I can bring. Let me know if I should bring anything else.

I'm just bringing this to the top so people will see it again. Thank you to everyone who has responded so far. If people are unable to make it to the cleanup in the morning, still feel free to drop by later in the day as RT, Bigstew and I will be available to help out anyone who has an interest in learning a few tips on how to increase their chances of catching a fish on a jig. Thanks again and hope to see you there.

To the top! images/icons/grin.gif Mark has gotten a few e-mails from people that will come, but it would be nice for you to post that here to inspire others to come for a good cause and a good time. ...
images/icons/shocked.gif Oh ya, Mark forgot to post that he will give away a brand new 2001 Turbo Porche (worth around $105,000.00) to the person that collects the most trash from the river banks. Cool!!! ... I think it was a Porche anyway. My hearing isn't great, so it might have been some kind of a porch? Or maybe a Turbo Thill float? Better check with Mark on that one. images/icons/confused.gif

I think you should make a big effort to attend this function.
Mark has awesome jigs for sale on ifish, in the form of a starter pack. Might be a good idea to purchase and bring one of these along. They are available right here! (http://www.ifish.net/fcj.html)
I am not sure if I can go or not, but I am going to try! Busy weekend with Bill's relatives.

My wife and I will be there. Do all the
coastal streams have a bait ban in place?
I known gone fishin had said bait was not
allowed on the Nestucca.

Thanks RT and Jen
Neutron,
The Wilson river is open for bait this year. As part of my jig clinic, I'll show how to rig up sand shrimp on a jig and also rubber worms on a jig head. This is a very productive way to catch steelhead, especially in low water. Look forward to seeing you there.

Mark,
I'm going to try and make it as well, don't know for sure yet. Maybe I can escort some to the Nestucca as I too am part of the adopt-a-river program. We "adopted" the Nestucca 3 years ago. I try and do an on-going clean up throughout the year. During the end of springer season I filled my truck with some beautiful things left from some very stupid people. images/icons/mad.gif
I know it could sure use some more help and I applaud your efforts and to all that will come.
I hope I can make it too.

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. I have talked with the Guide Shop and they will take any and all trash that we gather. I just received a huge box of large garbage bags and gloves from Oregon Adopt-A-River so we are covered there. If anyone has a portable BBQ please bring it along. I will bring all the necessary condiments for the BBQ including plates, forks, seasonings.
RT has guaranteed me a fresh summer steelhead (caught that morning) for the grill. Right RT?
For anyone who is coming from over the hill, the directions are fairly easy. Take Hwy 26 (Sunset Hwy) West to the Ore 6 (Tillamook/Banks) turnoff. Continue on Hwy 6 over the coast range and the guide Shop is located about Mile 5.5 on Hwy 6. We will meet behind the Guide Shop where there is lots of parking. If anyone has any questions, please drop me a line.

I have already committed to going for Silvers this Saturday. We will have to make arrangements to hook-up in the near future to meet and maybe I could get a lesson or two from you on jigging. I sent you my home address URL . Hope to hear from you. I have Thurs., Fri.& Sat. off from work. Your jigs look GREAT !!!! Sorry I can't make it . Tight Lines . Tom images/icons/cool.gif

Fishin Magician,
I would take you up on your offer to car pool, but I plan on heading out early and trying to pull some summer steel out of the Wilson before everyone gets together. I just received a box of jigs from Mark (they look awsome by the way) and I've got to get them wet.

As for the BBQ everyone needs to bring the meat(hamburger, hot dogs etc) of their choice to BBQ and if everyone would bring something like chips or whatever we can share that. Captain Hook has volunteered to bring his grill. It will be real informal and it does look like the weather will co-operate and remember this isn't just limited to the Wilson. The Trask and Kilchis are nearby and so is the Nestucca.

Thanks Bigstew for mentioning the topic about what to BBQ. There is a good chance at least one of us will hook into a fresh summer for the grill but it's best to bring your own meat that you would like to BBQ. As I mentioned before, I'll bring all the condiments and some spices. I'll also bring some pop and water to drink. Thanks to everyone for helping out here.

I wont be able to make the clean up. images/icons/frown.gif
But, I want to do something for those that make the sacrifice since I wont be there. I have about 40 burlap gunny sacks, that the sporting good stores sell for fish bags. I would like to dontate them to the people who show up for the river cleaning. My problem has been getting them to the event Saturday. I will be in Tillamook on Friday and Gone Fishin Guide Service (Marty) has agreed to bring them to the event if I drop them off at his house. Thanks Marty, you are just one classy guide. For those needing one more reason to go clean up garbage, Mark is giving out a jig and bobber to catch a fish on, and I will be giving you a bag to haul your fish home in.
If you have nothing going on Saturday, this is a good event to meet some people, learn a couple things, and help out the rivers.

Back to the top of the BB page images/icons/smile.gif . The weather is going to be good to make this an even more fun event. Whatever fresh new summer steelhead that came in during the week (so far the run has been mediocre, more should be coming in than have so far) should be in the better holes on the lower ends of the Tillamook area rivers with the water low. Some will be up in the mid to upper areas too though. And this low water is where Mark and his jig techs shine over other methods. And this nice weather makes the BBQ shine as far as I'm concerned images/icons/grin.gif . Yeeehaaaw! Hope to see a lot of you in the morning. - RT

I will supply the condiments for the meal including plates, silverware, napkins and such. My wife Cindy is also bringing a couple of salads along with chips and pop. Hope to see you there.

Thanks to all who helped clean up the Tillamook area rivers Saturday. And thanks much to Mark and Cindy for putting on this event. These things have no down sides - they are beneficial to the beauty of the environment and fun in lots of ways. ... I guess there was one down side - Stew's!!! He spent more time looking up at the sky from a position on his backside than any other trip this year! Guess it was his turn to do the slip and slide routine; and it's no small coincidence that he was wearing felt soled wading boots and I was wearing gym shoes. images/icons/wink.gif And nass feesh you C&R'd big guy. Also, Mark caught a summer steelhead on the way down and I caught one on the way back. Fun day!
