My wife, sister, niece, friends kid and I went to fish of the south jetty at Newport monday. The Ocean and bay were as flat as a pane of glass. The fishing sucked royaly! Candle fish, Millons of candle fish. The little b******s were everywhere on the bay side of the jetty. I took a little walk out on the jetty. On the south side (ocean side) there were huge balls of bait fish. I rigged up a little snagging rig to see if I could see what they were. There was a combination of small herring and smelt. The biggest was a herring about 5 inches long. Well that was my lame day of fishing for the week.
Tuesday we took our dogs to Waterloo on the S. Santiam park for a swim. Saw a guide pull into the ramp with a fish box full of springers. I didnt talk to hm because personally I thing the guy is an a**hole. At least his clients seemed happy with him. Why is it that some uides think they are god? I could never figure that one out.

Hey WR, I understand your concern about getting deleted because you have broken the latest stated board rules by being inflamatory against a percentage of guides. ... As far as you seeing the poor attitude of some of the arrogant guides as being mysterious I agree with you. It takes no special natural giftedness to dial into what is best catching fish when they are out there fishing nearly every day. Go figure images/icons/confused.gif . ....

As for all those thick bait schools you saw, that is typical of the great upswing in ocean survival rates we've gotten from the LaNina` ocean current patterns that last couple of years. I am curious and a bit concerned what effect this will have on the ocean bite this summer. With all the real fish to eat out there will the salmon be picky about what they grab? That's what I thought about why the schools of Chinooks off Tillamook Bay didn't bite well last fall; the ones that were caught were chuck full of candle fish. Will the coho be somewhat the same? I think they are more aggresive strikers than the 'nooks and don't stop to investigate as much either so I hope the fishing for them will be really good. There are tons of them out there, and if they aren't biting as usual then maybe this huge abundance of baitfish schools could be a culprit suspect with them also. My money is on limits galore images/icons/smile.gif .

Thanks for the post Willierower. We will be looking for the baitfish when we chase the silvers Friday.

RT, it could be a big deal. I'm with you though. Limits for all. They should be fat and sassy with all that feed in the ocean.

Just remember that salmon eat breakfast. Hit it at first light and be back in to see the fish checker before the sun hits the water. Early in the day fish the surface, 8 pulls or less. Last summer we were taking fish on the surface right behind the boat before daylight.

As for jigging herring, I didnt see anyone jigging for them.
About catching salmon of the South Jetty. Ive seen it done. Im thinking it can be done again. I saw a friend of mine get a nooker and a silver in 2 casts one morning a few years back. He was throwing a whole herring on a 3 foot leader, For wieght he was using a 2 oz trolling sinker. He would throw it uptide and slowly retrive it.
As for guides. 95% of the guides I know or met have been great guys. The guide I was reefering to is one of the best salmon fisherman I know. I will give him credit on that. He just has a bad attitude. Im not too found of him because low holed me once, Then on the same day he dropped in and anchored on a spot I was running divers in. We hooked a springer and I dropped down and of to the side to land it. We land the fish, I look up river and there he was, Anchored right where we were. I Told him I planned on rowing up and running the hole again. He bacically told me to go F... myself. That why I cant stand him. There are also a few other newbie guides that have some problems with thier attitudes.
2 guides that are really friendly and would never screw someone out of their water are, Kevin Marshall and Dwayne Draper.

Yes there are some good guides out there and the best I've ever fished with is Marty of Gone Fishin' Guides service. He is professional in every sense of the word.

Thanks Kwiky (I think?) actually the guide in question had a box full of springers so we know it couldn't be me. I did just get off the river a few hours ago. Six summers on the end of our lines jumping and going crazy and only one in the box when we were done. All on spinners. We were at the Wiley creek hole for close to two hours and didn't see one fish hooked by the bankies. Whats up with that? Joe

Hey, can you catch salmonids off of the south jetty??? It stands to reason (for me, anyway images/icons/smile.gif ) that maybe some of those fishy's come in close for an easy meal? I'd like to hear some thoughts/experiences on this. WR, I'm curious to know which of the S.Santiam guides you aren't found of. I've got a couple that aren't very high on my list, either. Especially that Salmonator joker images/icons/grin.gif. Just kidding, Joe. You're still top notch, even without the sled!

Sal,
How was the boat traffic on the river?

From what I hear the bankies did fairly well tuesday morning. The river has been hit or miss from the reports Ive been getting.

Have you heard from O.Mykiss at all. Did he just drop of the face of the planet?

Take care

WR, Grant (O.my) has no internet at the moment. He's still fishing occasionally and even catching a fish or two I hear! The traffic was't too bad except after we started hooking fish (rock garden I believe) five other boats moved in and there was lines in the water everywhere. Overall i'd say the traffic was just above average but not too bad... Joe

Spinners, Sal? images/icons/rolleyes.gif And here all this time I thought you were a real (i.e. bait) fisherman. There goes what little respect I had left for ya images/icons/tongue.gif .

While over getting sandshrimp, I'm going to catch a silver off of the South Jetty this weekend.
