I recently purchased an Okuma rod over the internet from Leehosports. This is one of the distributors listed on the Okuma America web page. The model is the PB70MH. It is a one piece, 7', rated for 30 to 80lb test. The incredibly reasonable price of 41$s made me a little leary but I figured that at that price ,what the heck. That was $41.00, delivered to my door. The rods look very appealing on the web page, but when I recieved it.....The guides are not anywhere near being lined up,there are glue runs around the guides, the threads that wrap the guides are very rough and the label that lists power and test is the wrong one.It shows 15 to 30lb, and it's a stick, there's no way that's accurate.I don't know, is that what I get for forty bucks, what do you guy's, and gals think? images/icons/confused.gif

Back when I was shopping around for peeler reels I checked out a few So Cal saltwater fishing BB's. I grew up learning to fish out of Long Beach/San Diego and the guys down there know there stuff. I almost ordered some okuma levelwinds out of cabelas for the same reason you did, but after hearing about the okuma quality from the guys down south I went with some Shimano charter specials. I guess most of what okuma makes is a copy of other stuff with lower tolerances. This was two years ago and maybe things have changed with them but I do believe you get what you paid for... Joe

Heard nothing but good things about their epix series spinning reels.

Tinman, I was really young and the memory is a little hazy, but I can still remember fishing around horseshoe kelp for sandbass and calico's and Catalina for sheephead and barracuda. I can also remember trolling broken back rapalas for bonita. My favorite part of the day was first thing in the morning at the bait barge watching the barracuda hanging out around the nets waiting for the occasional anchovie to slip through a hole.. Joe

Salmonator, I too grew up fishing San Diego/Orange County, both on the sportboats and on a variety of small skiffs. Back in the early 90's, I wrote for South Coast Sportfishing. As much as I love Salmon and Lingcod here in Oregon, nothing beats flyling a 'chovie off the corner or throwing iron at kelp paddies.

You know what, I'm reading my post over and it suddenly came to me what a moron I am.It brings to mind a couple phone calls I've had this week.Someone called the other night and what do you know, I had won a free weekend stay at some resort!! Then the same week one of my former credit card companies was going to give me free credit protection for six months. And then on top of that my daughter had been selected to participate in a local beauty paegent...That's another story. The bottom line and moral to the story is, you only get exactly what you pay for, and to expect anything different is idiotic.I'm almost afraid to try out the Okuma reel I bought last year for next to nothing.Thank god for Loomis and shimano, they'll stay in the house and as for Okuma, get out in the garage!!
