I have been wanting to find a good bank spot to try for a springer or steelhead, or whatever is running this time of year. Any suggestions? Im really hoping for a spot that is easy to get to and not dangerous for youngsters, as I'd like to bring my 5 year old nephew.

Thanks very much in advance =).

Matt:

Anywhere near water with a 5-year old should not be considered safe. Never take you eye off them. I suggest the gravel bar on the Sandy River between the railroad bridge and the I-84 bridge. If your five-year old likes to build things with rocks, this is a good spot. Plunking is a good choice. Stay away from the deeper hole under the railroad bridge and the head of the run. (Not that this is bad water, but it less suited for small children and plunking). The tailout above where the river breaks around the island is a good spot to soak a spin 'n glow on 24' of leader behind 4-6 oz of lead on a 6" dropper. About a bite or two a day. Hang a bell on your rod, keep an eye on the kid and enjoy.

Hey Matt,

Ain't seen you in a coons age images/icons/shocked.gif!

Ya should have been in my boat with the son and I a week or so ago images/icons/grin.gif. Kid caught shad until his arm was too tired to even hold it up images/icons/tongue.gif. He looked like I did after I single handed my first oversized Sturgeon images/icons/rolleyes.gif, (a lil 8 footer thanks to Captain Dan!) images/icons/tongue.gif.

Good luck on the bank.

Let me know if ya'd like to get out for some Sturgeon images/icons/rolleyes.gif.

Nav,

Thanks man, that sounds like a good spot =). I've taken my newphew fishing quite a few times, and I watch him like a hawk. He really enjoys getting out of the house and having fun in the outdoors.

Ray,

Yeah Dan took me oversize fishing too =). Caught a 7.5' and a 9.5' one that took all 4 of us in the boat to get in, due to it being foul hooked in the side!! This weekend, im doing yard work (yuck), but I'll be free the weekend after if you feel up to some sturgeon fishing. I still haven't caught a legal sized, and would love to bring home one for dinner. My nephew is not quite ready for a boat yet, though, as he likes to run around and play a lot still, and doesnt have the patience for a long boat ride. As far as not being around, I've been kinda busy gettin ready to start school again here at the end of the month, and just sorta not had a chance to get out and do any serious fishing except for when Dan took me.

Hmm... on the note of shad.. I wonder if there are any decent spots for shad from the bank? Im sure my nephew would have a ball hooking into a few of those!

Matt,

Do a search on shad.

Someone mentioned a good bank spot in OC but I don't remember the details.

Good luck and stay in touch.

Matt,
Try clackamette park at the mouth of the Clackamas. My luck from shore has been above the mouth on the Willamette side. Anywhere on up toward the sewage pipe seems to work. Casting a jig or spinner. Lots of smallmouth in this area too and gives a kid something to catch that will fight. Good luck to you. images/icons/tongue.gif
