I'm going on a 3 day float on the John Day this weekened. i was just wondering if anyone had an idea of what baits work the best? Colors? and also i am going to bust out the fly rod and hopefully work it in a little. what flies do you reeccomend for the bass over there? wooly buggers? poppers? anything helps.
Thanx Mo
Hope this helps, but I fished the John Day once, a bit upstream of Arlington.
If your talking about SMB, it didn't seem to matter what was used.
There are some many SMB's in that lower river they will hit just about anything.

Magic,
I have never fished the John Day, but i have fished the Grande Ronde extensivley, and we had a great trip a couple weeks ago and caught 90 percent of our fish on topwater. We were using the Torpedos, an 1/8 or 1/4 oz. The fish we just killin them and it was a blast to see them take it on the top. I believe the john day is very similiar to the ronde, so i would take a few torpedos and give them a whirl. It was also interesting that we caught much larger fish on the top water, rather than on the grubs.
Have fun

my go to is the powerbait "pumpkin seed" rubber grubs. dark brown or black with the black jig head.
for fly fishing try stripping brown streamers and dont be scared to experiment with some scents. Also try poppers on top. You can also try stripping big dryflies across the top on the banks.
hope this helps....in all reality you dont need to get too technical. Just switch up if something isnt working.

John Day smallies aren't the most sophisticated bass in the crick. I've cot'em on a hook dressed with a patch of denim. Topwater is fun. With the clear water, they'll track the lure while it's in flight and intercept it as it touches down.
Magic,
I basically use anything that looks like motoroil. brown, blacks,Kalin 3 and 5" grubs. Pretty much anything will work. I will be putting in at Twick on Saturday and pull out a E Clarno on Tuesday. See you on the river maybe
