Looking for tackle ideas for huge browns. I plan to fish the Missouri between Helena and Great Falls. Will be there around the fourth of July. It's artificials only. We will be in a drift boat. Have fished it in the past with success on rainbows and smaller browns using wolly buggers and panther martins. Might try pulling plugs. I know there is a good population of crawdads they feed on. Does anyone have any hot ideas they have used successfully?

I've used a full sink line with a crawdad immitation fly loaded with floatant so that when you strip line the crawdad is pulled down and then allowed to float back up and stripped down again. The goal is to immitate a swimming crawdad. I know this works in lakes, you may have to modify it when dealing with current?
Muddler minnows allowed to swing through the current below you should work also.
If you have time to fish north Idaho on the drive over let me know, I have had 50 fish days and never seen another person on a few of the streams you'll be driving past.

Haven't tried it myself, but rumor has it that casting a miniture half and half Alvin--slow retrieve, into the primary clarifiers at the Portland sewage plant can sometimes be productive. Let me know if you give it a whirl.
Oh, and make sure the hooks are razor sharp. images/icons/grin.gif

Finn-icky, was wondering if I can borrow some fishin gear to follow up on your suggestion. images/icons/rolleyes.gif Maybe your Jetcraft too. images/icons/tongue.gif images/icons/tongue.gif images/icons/tongue.gif images/icons/grin.gif
Last year about the same time spinners were working great. We had a ball. Caught many rainbow trout from 16"-22". My goal this year is to get a picture of a 10# brown. People flyfishing seemed to be catching more browns than rainbows. Have done quite alot of flyfishing for trout, and am in an experimental mood.
I'm thinking of tying up some large unweighted olive woolly buggers and fish them behind some divers of some kind. The crawdad idea is a good one. Definitely will have a fly rod strung up with a woolly bugger in the boat.
Thanks for the tips L-Hkr.
It seems like a shame to drive past all that good water in ID, but the accommodations are good in MT, as my partners are locals and ex-locals. Thanks for the offer.
