I'm looking to get a pack pole spinning set up for trout, and I'm looking for recommendations on poles and reels.

I'm thinking 6' to 6'6" and medium or medium light action. What do you guys recommend?

What about on reels? Shimano versus ???? I'd like to keep the reel under $125.

What about closed spinning reels for the kids? Any recommendations there?

Thanks.

id say depends on what your going for...trout i would say the 6'6" thats what i have and a decent shimano reel....something that i wouldnt mind stuffing away in a pack on my back along with other things on top of it, but hey thats just me

Assuming you want the pack pole to use while backpacking, I suggest making sure that the rod breaks down to dimensions compatible with your pack a top concern. It is amazing how many low branches and the like one discovers as soon as you strap on a rod that extends above the top of the pack.

I have two that I use. One is a cheap 6'-6" Renagede that breaks down into 5 pieces. If you flip the handle around it turns the setup into a 4 weight fly pole.

The other is a 6' 4 piece Shakespeer. Both are nice rods and do what they are made for. I built a PVC rod carrier that will carry both poles.

There are plenty of reels out there that are not overly expensive that you can pick up for light tackle use. Same with fly reels.

I know that Fishermans in Oregon City has a couple of break down models.

Good luck.

I build mine with 7 piece blanks and use singlefoot ceramic guides fly rod design .. that way a small spinning reel can be used in a pinch also... Barney
