We floated the Umpqua River the other day and caught some dandy smallmouth bass. It was kind of funny to bring my buddy Mike all the way from Troutdale when he has some world class fishing out his front door. He was pleasantly suprised to see we have some good fishing to. They were hitting topwater, spinnerbaits, tubes, and jigs. Remember to but the big ones back to enjoy another time.

This one had a broken spine or was messed up at one time. I have caught this same fish myself on another trip.

This one was a toad and we actually saw one bigger but darkness was setting in and we didn't have time to fish for it. Tight lines

It was just the bullet weight hanging down from a tube bait.

Very cool i gotta get on some fish like that, looks like a blast.
They all looked like toads to me! My largest smallie is a 15 incher!

Great grade of fish out there! The Umpqua holds some great smallie fishing down there!
As for the dark photos, if you can turn your flash on, or use it, that takes out any shadows from the hats, and brightens up your fish and pics!

There are a lot of dinks in the river but there are a ton of toads also, I have fished it for 14 years or so and always manage some decent fish. My biggest was 21.5" I released it. Just believe me when I tell you there is no shortage of big smallies in the umqua river.
