I just built a dedicated Kokanee rod spiral wrapped, out of a 5wt moderate action fly rod blank . Added a Shimano Bantam Mag 100 spooled with 8lb Maxima and is it Sweeeet . Lots of stockers and a few Kokes landed with it already , but yesterday caught and released a 2+lb Coho in Big Lagoon . I think I'm in love...:hearton:  :yay::yay: Barney

I don't wrap any conventional rods any more except for rollers. Spiral is sweet, from Salmon rods to tuna sticks so far - going to build a bunch of trout gear soon.

I transition my line much faster than you do, but that isn't that important with a limber 5wt

I used 2 guides off the reel and did my 180 deg. with 3 guides . All guides were leftovers that were laying around thats probably why I crammed them on . This is my first spiral wrap and would appreciate any tips , or criticisom (sp) for my next one ... Thanks Guys... Barney

There is no right or wrong way to do a spiral or acid wrap. The only thing you have to make sure of is not let the line touch the blank.

If you have not found it yet, check out the Rodbuilding site it is an organization not a commercial or network facility. Basically a forum of rod builders who share ideas and what not. There is one guy there that wrote a pretty good article on the forces involved in spiral wrap and most of them advocate one stripper guide, and one transition guide to get that line around the bottom of the rod as fast as you can. Sort of like 0, 90, 180 degrees, the next guide after the first 180 takes the majority of the force so you would want to make sure that guide is still backbone section on stiffer rods - or at least so goes the suggestion on that web site. I guess from reading between the lines if the 2nd guide is past the backbone it can cause unusual building of the forces on the rod and make a part of the rod bear load that wasn't supposed to - that is about as best as I can explain it.

With a noodle 5wt for Kokes I wouldn't worry about it - remember there is no wrong way. Just have some fun with the rod and catch lots of fishies. Take a look at some of Crabbait's posts in the tech tips section on wraps and what not the guy is a true artist - me I just build rods that work.

Very nice rod. I have never built a light weight spiral rod but I am a hard core believer in spiral wraps for all my steelhead, salmon, and mac rods.I also believe the transition should happen fairly quickly. I use some of the guidance out of Dale Clemens book "Advanced Custom Rod Building" The main thing is to just build rods that work for your style of fishing. http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n85/fishmanmike/IMG_0134.jpg

Thanks Fellas I'll let ya know how the next one turns out ...Thank you Stickfish for your info on guide placement . I really like this spiral wrap thing , but I'm not a newbie at rod craft ... built this one because I never did one before , now I'm hooked...:idea:Sincerly Barney
