Got the boys up at 5:20 AM and loaded into the truck at 5:45, rolled into Speelyai Bay at 6:30. We started fishing around 7:00. Put out the red & silver dodger, red wedding ring with red corn – fish on before I could get the 2nd rod in the water. We went 1 for 3 on red.
This was the fist time using the new Daiwa Spinmatics rods (loved them) - so I did not think I needed to use snubbers. Lesson: when fishing Kokes with Kids – use snubbers! Then red stopped working and I switched to green. Green with silver blade and especially green with brass blade caught the rest of the fish for us. We used both un-dyed and chartreuse dyed corn (all soaked in Pro-Cure Kokanee Special Oil) with the green wedding rings. Both caught fish, but the brass blade n green was the hot lure. We ended up going 7 for 15+. I did much better after I added the snubbers. I marked lots of fish at 45+ feet, but caught most around 20 feet. One came while I had just let 70 feet of line out and put the rod in the holder so I could hook it to the downrigger. With the downrigger clip in my hand I looked up to see the pole dancing. I could not have been more the 5 or 10 feet down. The boys became board and wanted to go swimming (it was warm) so we where off the water by 10:30.
Want to test your fishing skills? – Try running two rods, two downriggers, the kicker, keep the boat straight, pass out food, net fish and keep a 7 and 8 year old interested and manage to catch a few. I’m not bragging, but I was worn-out. I wonder if that is what it is like to be a guide!
It was a nice day to be a dad. Did you go? How did you do?
