Do you mean "lining" -- drifting a long leader through a school of stacked up fish, hoping to thread the leader into the mouth of a fish as it opens and closes to keep oxygenated water moving over it's gills (force feeding), "flatlining" -- trolling a long line on the surface, or something else?

People who can't catch fish in the correct manner floss . In my opinion this is a form of snagging , and should be illegal .

If your asking about a Salmon/Steelhead fishing technique...
You're in the wrong section....post this in the IFish community section.
Lake fisherpeople often troll using a method referred to as "long lining" but it's not illegal. Just a way of catching those close to the surface.

Its A Form Of Snagging Fish. Nothing Else But That. They Care Nothing About The Future Of Fishing Except To Kill A Fish.

I thought long lining for trout was when you trolled a long weightless set up behind the boat.

yes...Ive heard of people calling it "longlining" when they let like 75 to 100 yards of line out behind the boat while trolling.
and "lining" salmon is nothing more than snagging...I had a guy in Alaska try to convince me and himself that it is a legitimate way to catch fish....LOL

Long lining and flossing are for scum-bummer! I have seen way to much of that stuff fishing lately expecially on Three Rivers. Im tired of seeing fish after fish hooked in the back, tail, or the gills. Then they play the fish out around the corner and bring it back saying it was hooked in the mouth. They really tick me off when their 10ft. leader gets caught and tangled in mine. Any suggestions on how to deal with these people besides cutting their line or getting in a fight? Thanks

report them....I hate to be a snitch, but people cheating because they arent smart enough to catch a fish legally really upset me. Maybe kindly remind them that it is illegal. Then if/when they want to argue/fight withdraw and tell them it was only a suggestion. then call the cops and tell them they have drugs on them....haha works every time. only kidding or am I?

Excuse me guys but we kinda got off track here.
This is the trout talk section and the long lining I believe this post was refering to is a "lake trolling technique."
The snagging debate / rant goes on in the other sections.
Please refer to the other sections for that type of discussion.
Thanks

jzell is right. Long lining is trolling a plug 100 feet or more, much more behind the boat. Popular for browns around here and rainbows and early spring macks at Tahoe. Its done for stealth and especially in very clear lakes. There is plenty on California trout forums about this. So there.... we finally set the record straight.;)

BTW I would love to be long lining a Rapala for a big Brown along the shoreline of a lake right now. Don't be hatin' me now!:flowered:
Flossing by definition in the trout forum is what the dentist advises for less cavaties!

Lining fish happens a lot all over with salmon and steelhead. I know and have fished multiple rivers in Alaska Oregon and Idaho where lining fish is the regular practice but I dont think that there is anything illegal about it. Unethical maybe but illegal no. I am not posting this to tork anyone off or get under someones skin. Thats not my point. I just dont believe there is a law that states using a leader 8, 10, or even 15 feet is breaking a law. Unless your casting and jerking on every bump then it may be illegal.

I am often called a long liner, I let spinners go way down the river, way down. I also use that method for trophy trout no/small weight behind the boat in a lake.
