I have a 2001 N/R Commander that I bought used about three years ago. It's the 350efi jet with the Hamilton 212. The question I have...Are there areas I need to check for sand/gravel? I have noticed the operating temperatures have slowly gone up the last year, especially when pulling.

259,

Great question. Your cooling system might be starting to plug up with sand and silt. I am not the one to help but if you go over to the riverjet site there are alot of guys over there that will help you out.

Once you get the intercooler ungraveled I suggest you install a raw water filter on your setup You won't be sorry;)

A sand filter is a must if you run skinny water or beach your boat alot (like I do).
I recently installed one and was shocked how much sand was trapped on my first outing.:bigshock:
Cheap insurance.

I did a photo play-by-play on the installation. I wonder if it is tech tip worthy?

Just another note worth mentioning. Keep an eye on your oil level and keep those filters changed. This is also a small part of the cooling system.

Monitor and log when you add coolant.
Check your plugs. If the ceramic is yellow / green you have a blown head gasket - which can result in overheating or raised temperatures.

I cleaned out the heat exchange. Not much sand but there was a little. I decided to check the thermostat since I figured the sand was not the problem. It was the thermostat. I put it in boiling water and it barely opened. Thank you all again. I'm still going to get a sand trap.

IDWITHHELD...I'll do a search for your post. I'm probably going to do the sand trap myself. It would be a great reference.

I haven't put the pictures together yet for a how-to. I found some info on ifish...but not a lot.
But, I bought my sand trap from KEM Equipment Inc in Tualatin. I'll warn you it's not cheap. But, when you see the quality and construction it's worth every penny.
They sell a beautiful trap....just not a mounting bracket.
Good job on the diagnosis.
