I did something today that I'm not used to doing. Instead of hitting highway at the crack of black; myself, a buddy, and my daughter hit the road at a nice relaxing 11:30 a.m. A friend told me about this little lake and suggested we use yellow rooster tails.

We finally arrive and start fishing around 2:00 p.m. or so. We were rigged with ultra-light's, 4 lb main, 2 lb leader, and my go to lure; the frog flatfish. Even though I was told they like the yellow roostertails, it wouldn't feel right to me to leave my flatfish in the box.

Within about ten minutes my buddies rod buries hard. I thought it was snagged at first as this little gem is loaded with stumps and snags. I quickly realized I was wrong. After a real nice fight and some tense moments with the 2lb leader and some brush, Jim lands this nice 18 1/2 " fish.

I guess my buddy wasn't telling fish stories when he said this lake held some nice fish. We continue draggin the flatties around the lake. About an hour and a half later my daughter's rod burries hard. She grabs on and starts reelin. The fish surfaces. We see a real big fish on the other end and my heart starts racing as I really want her to land this fish. I had to coach her some as she has never landed a trout this big. She fought it like a champ. After a few line peeling runs we brought this fat just shy of 22" fish into the net. She was very excited as it was her biggest trout, plus it was the biggest fish of the day. I really wanted to let this fish go, but I lost the discussion with my daughter and my buddy on this one. It is a dark fish, but it fought very well and my daughter did a great job fighting it all the way by herself. Nice heavy fish and she had to strain a little to hold it up.

After eating dinner on shore, my daughter decided her fish would hold up as the big one of the day, so she decided to stay on shore with a very nice family who was camping. She hooked up with the kids (mostly the boy) to spend the evening catching salamanders.

The last fish of the evening was caught by my buddy and was the perfect fish for the pan. A nice 15" fish that made a few runs of it's own.

Three hook up's and three fish landed. We had two other take downs that didn't stick. I went home with no fish to my credit other then rowing all day and supplying the flatfish. We did run yellow rooster tails for a little while, but went back to my old stand by.
