Starting earlier this spring my x-long 8hp Honda won't run right. I can start the motor and begin trolling, the motor will run perfect for 1/2 hour to two hours, then with no warning it will die. No cough or spudder, just die. I then put it in neutral give it a half pull and restarts every time. Once restarted it will die every 1-5 minutes. H2O/ fuel seperator replaced yearly, fuel filter replaced both before and after problem, with no help.
ANY IDEAS?

Have you checked the fuel supply hose? and repaced or cleaned the screen in the portable tank? you can get an air leak in your hose and lose prime sometimes . Or you can be like Me and step on it while running the tiller and make your motor quit:blush:Good luck Barney:wave:
From experience, the first thing that comes to mind is the vent.... is the vent clear?
The next thing I would do is to replace the entire fuel source/line and see what happens. Borrow a different tank with fuel line and see if the problem repeats.

Last weekend trout fishing, I ran the motor off my main fuel tank, then changed it over to the 3 gallon tank that comes with the motor, made no difference.

My T8 Yamaha did the same thing but it is plumbed into the water separater just above the main fuel tank. Sometimes it would run for hours and other times it wouldn't run for 5 minutes. After a lengthy diagnosis they finally figured out it was a faulty check valve in the "primer" squeeze bulb. Doesn't make sense but replaced the bulb and all has been well for over 2 years. I'm guessing there was also a small air leak in the bulb and this was allowing air into the system but for sure the check valve was bad.

There is a small fine mesh screen on the back of the motor(fuel pump) where the fuel line comes from the tank to the engine. That small screen can clog and give you fits. It is accessable under the larger than normal sloted screw on fuel pump. I installed a small easily changed inline fuel filter on mine too.
That might be the problem.

My tank has a vent you can close. Many times my motor has quit, PANIC, only to find some one noticed the open vent and closed it without saying anything.
Another item, disassemble and clean you carb. Clean poke everything out and scratch off any varnish with a wire out of a bread wrapper twist tie. Clean with carb cleaner in the spray can.
Make sure no air is getting in the intake line.
Are you running at very low RPMs? If so you may want a lower pitch prop so the engine doesn't lug and foul.
Maybe the switch box tired and overheating, have you put fresh plugs in?. But probably fuel related, but plugs are a common problem too.

My past experience with the same problem have been the result of fuel being left in the motor over the winter or just over time. It then turns to resin. Take the nut off the bottom of the carb and unscrew the jet and clean the hole out with a piece of stiff wire. Clean all other exposed parts that have the tell tale brown resin on them. should work fine.
Before letting your motor set over long periods it is a good idea to remove the hose while running the motor and spray fogger in the carb until it quits.

derhoser, nice call. I took the entire carb off, removed float bowl and cleaned, everything appears back to normal now. Thanks

Your very welcome. Scratched my head on that one a couple of times.
