I'm a nurse and we have these IV pumps that are used to administer IV narcotics. They are called Patient Controlled Analgesic pumps. We leave them at the bedside and the patient has a button they push when they need some pain medicine. We clamp them to the IV poles so somebody can't just walk off with a 150 mg of morphine. There is a large knob you turn that has a rachet like system inside the clamp housing. Once you get it clamped down tight you can't back it off unless you insert a key and unlock the rachet mechanism. I just thought the rachet mechanism could be used on out board motors. The manufactures could easily design some sort of similiar locking device for motor clamps. Something needs to be done to prevent kicker theft and the current measures (padlocks, cable, chains etc...) don't seem to be working. What do you think?

I think there is something already like that available from Mercury. Exact same concept. The outer ring inhibits a standard tool from attaching to the bolt and only works with the proper key is inserted.
I personally have welded the nuts onto the bolts that pass through the kicker and bracket, have replaced all bolts with security bolts and added a coated chain from the kicker to the transom using security bolts (with nuts welded). Additionally, I have replaced the interior transom panel screws with security screws.
If you want my kicker, you are going to have to be one determined meth addict.
Security is not necessarily about one counter measure to stop a crook. It is about overlaping security measures that impede their access or hopefully their will to touch your stuff.

IDWITHELD, It sounds like you've put alot of work into protecting your kicker, I salute you. I feel like the manufactures should be more aware of how easy it for theives to steal these motors. It would be nice if they would implementanti theft devices into the initial design. I would buy one brand over another if I felt I could leave my kicker on my boat and not worry that it will be gone in the morning. My question is how do you get the manufactures to start doing this?

Unfortunately, you hear stories of people who have welded the bolts on their kickers, only to have the theifs just cut through the transom. :(
